Hey everyone, our dear friend Christian (some of you know him as the guy who installed the fuck yeah Tarp at the last Ben Country) was in a relatively serious bike accident this afternoon (Thurs, 2/23) near North Seattle Community College. He's been unconscious since the accident, and is in stable condition at the ICU in Harborview.

Since he's been unconscious, the authorities aren't sure about the details of the event, and are seeking any witnesses (it's not suspected there was a vehicle involved). If you happen to know anything, or feel like spreading the word to anyone who might have been in the neighborhood, the help is much appreciated.

I was just coming here to post the same thing. Really tragic, and I hope everyone there is holding up okay.

Here's to hoping they find some witnesses.

*sigh* That's a bummer, to say the least. He was a cool guy at BC, I hope for the best.

Everyone is still pretty optimistic. He's still unconscious (but also sedated), but is stable, and is moving around a little in bed.

If you want to help, repost a link to the bike blog article to your facebook, twitter, etc. and encourage others to repost it as well. This is one of the few times when chain-posting is encouraged, so go crazy.

*bump*

Hey were you guys at Ben "pouring rain" Country? Then you remember who Christian is. He was the foreman of the tarp over the bridge construction/rigging, and the guy that made the covered bucket toilet outhouse setup too.

Yeah, dude was awesome, right? No one even asked him to or even expected anyone at all to bring all that stuff. He just lugged extra gear and made camp awesome, like a boss.

So I'm sad this happened to such a nice guy. But also I want to call to attention this awful seemingly trend of cyclist hit-n-runs: 1st Avenue guy on April 12th 2011, Mike Wang July 29th 11, whoever this guy was Oct 17th 2011, Christian Rusby Feb 23rd 2012. At least if the driver stops and reports it immediately the victim has a better chance of survival. Whomever killed Robert Townsend didn't even face charges, so what's the harm in stopping and reporting it?

I'd love to see a radio campaign from the Washington State Patrol about hit and runs, like those DUI ads. "We are out here. We will run checkpoints. We will catch you. You will face more jail time, etc."

'I was just lucky enough to see my friend Christian give the best thumbs up I have ever seen. That was his first response since his bicycle accident last thurs. I have no doubt it's from all the love and positive energy sent his way from around the world. To all my beautiful friends out there, send your positive energy his way. Sing him a song, dance and laugh for him.'

FYI: Courtney and I went to see Christian this morning, and we had a chat with his wife Megan. For what it's worth, they found some witnesses and identified a part of the bike that malfunctioned and caused him to endo, so it wasn't a hit and run. Due to the potential for future legal action, I was asked not to be any more specific than that at this time.

Health-wise, the news this morning was that he has a broken cheekbone but no other significant physical damage, though there is some kind of brain trauma. He also appears to have unrelated pneumonia, which is kind of bogging his immune system down. He's clearly got a long road to recovery, but there's a lot of hope and the thumbs up Deven mentioned is a good sign.

Anyway, that's it.

This is really scary. I've met Christian a couple of times and he seems like a very responsible and mechanically savvy guy. Please keep us posted both on his condition and the cause of the accident.

Christian is a good dude. Best wishes. We're all on the edge of our seat hoping things come out right here.

there's a blog of his progress:

Gabriela says that signing up and posting some words of encouragement would really mean a lot.
