There is a group of us camping at ocean city state park for these upcoming razor clam digs. The tides are OK at -.03 and -.05, But the digs will be during daylight hours which, if the weather cooperates, can be quite pleasant. Let me know if you may be interested as I have reserved a few campsites already and there are still many available.

I know I have spoken with a few of you about digging clams and this is one of the first good dig opportunities of the very limited season.

MOAR information:

License:
https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/wdfw/licenses_fees.html

shellfish licenses can be purchased at any fred meyer or fishing shop.

Camping:
https://secure.camis.com/WA/OceanCityStatePark%2fLoop4(Sites131-178)%3fMap

(cut and paste the above link for best results)

My sites are the red tents 175 and 176

If you have never razor clammed it's fun and the clams taste really good.

This is a nice area and since the clam digs are early in the AM there are many possibilities for cycling the rest of the day.

My razor clam video:

Hope to see some of you guys there!

Jake

Awesome. I'm in. I can get my hands on an extra clam gun or two.

What time are you headed out there Friday?

Guns? For clams? I've got a rifle. Can I just bring that and shoot stuff?

In a perfect world I would like to leave around 2-3pm on friday. It does take close to 3hrs to drive (stops for gas, food, etc.) I like to set up camp in the light hours. I may bring my boat and if I do that then that would open up three seats in my car. Plus I could fit some bikes in the boat.

I'm still ironing at the fine print on my end but my sites are reserved so the trip has the green light.

If your interested in going get me your email and I can keep you moar informed. Everybody is invited, it's almost always a good time.

also, as it will be my 30th birthday I'm pretty sure we'll bring a keg of something good.

Outdoor Emporium on 4th ave in SODO sells the license them too (Cash or check only)

I just bought my license. I went for the 3-day razor clam one (~$6+2$ transaction fee) since the annual shellfish license expires in May and I don't know if I'll be out crabbing before then.

I'll probably treat myself to a late night on the Thursday 3/8 ride and then hit the road south around noon or so. I prefer the daylight camp set up too.

Excited!

FWIW, I checked out Ocean City State Park last weekend when the wind was howling. The creek we followed to the beach was flowing backward from the wind, but it's a great spot, and unlike a lot of beach campgrounds, the camping is in the nearby woods, not on some bleak parking lot next to an open beach.

Ocean Shores is a mile or so south and seems to have all the tourist crap you need. The Quinault Casino is just north of the park, for your gambling, cheap cigarette and cheap buffet dinner pleasure.

*Outdoor emporium.

In regards to Ocean city campground, it is great. We have been going there for years, I haven't been this year but given the winter has been dry I don't see the campgrounds being too muddy. As GS stated the casino is right there and Ocean shores is right around the bend. If the weather cooperates there could be some nice biking/drinking, drinking/biking opportunities.

I have two sites reserved but I would advise reserving moar. the nights I reserved are Fri 3/9 and sat 3/10 my sites are 175 and 176.

UPDATE:

I now have 3 campsites reserved and Andre has one as well, all next to eachother. They allow 2 tents per site and this time of year, it seems like the rangers really have nothing to do. The nights are Friday and Sat night and the clam digs are sat and sun mornings. Let me know if you want in on a site as of right now 2 full sites are available. and are running 20 bucks a per nite for each site with 1 on site parking spot and 1 spot reserved in the parking lot which is walking distance. They sell firewood (good seasoned fir and pine, cedar tinder included) for 5 bucks a bundle inside the park year round so now you have more room for beer/whiskey.

FYI
http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/shellfish/razorclams/rules_regs.html

Quote:
Bag Limit
The first fifteen razor clams regardless of size or condition must be retained. One daily limit of fresh shellfish may be in possession...

Allowable Harvesting Gear
Razor clams may be taken by hand, hand-operated shovel, or tube with a minimum outside diameter of 4" or (4" x 3" if elliptical). Each digger must use a separate container, but may share digging equipment.

ie, we can share clam guns but make sure you hold your own clams and don't hold any clams if for some silly reason you don't have a license.

also, look for the bigger waterholes which tend to lead to bigger clams.

I have 1 xtra clam guns and 1 shovel....

It is a strict rule you keep your clams seperate from others and you must dig your OWN keep. I have seen people approached for this before.

Any type of mesh bag works good for clams, large re-used onion bags are my choice and I think I have a few to loan out. Rubber boots/waders will make your day easier. I have an extra set of hip waders and full waders also.

Metal clams guns are better than pvc for obvious reasons.

I could use a ride if anyone has space, otherwise I'll have to haggle over a borrowed car.

Just a reminder. This weekend is also the beginning of Daylight Savings Time aka spring forward. So the Sunday tide doesn't let you sleep in as long as you think.

So I was thinking we should try and incorporate some kind of a ride for Saturday, in the style of point83 of course. Ocean Shores wouldn't know what hit them, A tsunami of inebriated cycling if you will.

thoughts?

Awesome sauce.

I'm having trouble locating the clam gun, but it sounds like we have a few on hand?

I think I'll put the single speed back together for the ride. Aberdeen isn't all that far away either.

The place to drink around there is definitely the Green Lantern Pub, just north on 109 in Copalis Beach. It's kind of like the Baranoff but without all the pretension.
