WHERE: Meet at University Village Starbucks [map]
WHEN: Saturday, Feb 16th, 5:45 AM, depart 6:00 AM
WHAT: 107 miles to Bellingham in about 12 hours. Average speed: ~9mph.
--==--
Yep. Get your calendars out and start looking for the best day in mid-February for to ride from the University Village Starbucks to the Boundary Bay Brewery in Bellingham. I was thinking Saturday the 16th.
Ideally we will pick up Ally Rae from a date at 6 in the morning and then get covered in ice and then hurt our perineums real bad on our cheap plastic saddles. Also, beer? Anyway. |

No date that I have been on, which ended at 06:00, is a date which would lead to a 100 bike ride. A shower, and a few calls to confirm my "survival" of the event, sure, but a 100 mile ride is right out. |

I would like to come along on this outing.
Didn't we go in January last year? Either way, February 16th sounds good. We should probably buy some train tickets at some point. |

That's a really rough route outline, but it gets the point across. Both Brandon and I have the route memorized, and Brandon knows a shortcut near Stanwood to avoid going up an extra hill.
I like this route because it keeps you mainly on back country roads away from I-5. It's a few more miles than other routes, but more pleasant.
If A. Rae isn't coming this year I think we should all at least smoke cigarettes the entire way. |

Burke-Gilman to the Woodinville; over the hill to Snohomish; the Centennial Trail to Arlington. Along the Stillaguamish to Stanwood and then straight north to Mount Vernon. Across the Skaget Valley to Chuckanut, then straight to Bellingham.
Did we do it in January? We should ride about on the year. I'll check the records. |

It was Thursday, January 27th.
How about Saturday, January 26th, weather permitting? |

I could probably come along for the mid february date, or a sunday.
As for the train, only the morning southbound train has bicycle accomodations, and only for 6 bikes, so plan accordingly. I would have room for a few in my goddamn filthy anarcho-commune, and I have friends who also like putting up bikers.
Also it is possible to get from bellingham to seattle via public transit, albeit on weekdays and there's only enough room for at most 3 bikes. It's only about 5 bucks though. |

It looks like Saturday, February 16th is the favourite.
THE PLAN:
Start location: University Village Starbucks (here)
Start time: Saturday Feb 16th. Arrive at 5:30AM to leave at 6:00AM
Finish location: Boundary Bay Brewery, Bellingham (here)
Finish time: train leaves Fairhaven Station at 7:40PM. It's doable. But we only made it last year by the skin of our teeth with great weather and no mechanicals. We are not likely to be graced with such luck twice.
LODGING:
Seems like we'll need to find a place to stay and take the train the next morning. How many beds do we need to find? |

Good call Brandon. Feb the 16th it is. Andrew, is it really true that there are no bike spots on evening trains? That sucks! Hopping on the morning train will be ok too -- this way we can go to the Bagelry.
If we go ahead and spend the night, then our only real deadline for getting up there will be sunset, which is 5:35pm for that day. Riding Chuckanut in the dark is not my idea of a good time. Drinking beer with friends while it's dark outside is a little closer to the mark. |

Roll call:
Lee
Brandon
Bobhall
Ben
Pete
Evilmike
Nova
Aden
Andy
Molly
and Heidi said she'd come
and in my dearest of fantasies, Ally Rae
It'd be remarkable if half of you actually climbed out of bed at 5:00 that morning. But six is still good company for a century. |

This tells you about bikes and trains. http://www.amtrakcascades.com/TrackWork.aspx
I assume this is what Andrew is referring to.
It seems to indicate that you won't have a Talgo train for most Bellingham/Seattle runs until March 31 (only on the Talgos can you throw your bikes in unboxed). But the notice at the top says all Talgo trains are back in service, so I'm confused. |

Isn't it the case that there are only 6 bike spaces on the trains that let you stow your bike un-boxed? That would really suck.
Anybody interested in riding back down to Seattle the next day, into the wind? |

Boxes, at ten bucks, won't exactly break you; and they're big enough you don't even need to take your wheels off. Just take a pedal wrench and whatever allen key you need to turn your handlebars sideways and you're set. It's not so bad. |

Also, if I know how many boxes will be needed ahead of time, we're getting back into the bike building at work, so I should be able to grab a few boxes for free, which is much better than ten dollars.
Also, I am not yet sure whether I will be coming down the day before to ride the whole distance, or riding down halfway to meet you guys.
And as for bad weather, it's all relative, sure it might get a little wet, but there's nothing like a 47 kt tailwind to get you to bellingham in a hurry.
