(image from feb 2007)

the route is 31 miles from darrington and relatively flat.

NF-26 is gated at milepost 12, leaving plenty of car-free riding afterwards to find wherever we want to camp. it looks awesome. there are also lots of hikes.

it also has the highest incident of bigfoot sightings. so there's that.

PLANS:

Departure point: 65th St. Park & Ride, at 65th and Ravenna NE. the launchpad for many great adventures.

Departure time: 830am, Saturday. note that that is DEPARTURE time. be there before that. especially if you are not driving and will need a ride. if you want somebody to pick

"Who am I riding with?": might be a good idea to figure this out in advance. i think that there will end up being more than enough space for everybody, but i'm not making any guarantees. if you want to be certain that your arrival at a parking lot in the early morning won't be in vain, make some plans.

"What am I eating, drinking?": what you bring. i'm amenable to a grocery stop in darrington. if somebody wants to make some kind of big meal and get folks to chip in, that's a solid plan as well. i for one will be bringing some port and some beer, likely.

"Where am I sleeping?": in the woods. bring or borrow (asap) the things you need for this. the current weather forecast says it might sprinkle on us saturday night, but up in the mountains things can be pretty variable. don't be stupid.

"Can my bike make it?": yes. old dudes that lost their hands in the great war and got mustard gassed by the jerries used to ride wooden rims on roads rutted by wagons. don't be a pussy.

any more questions i can answer?

i'll update this post with any salient details if they fall out of the comments, so feel free to ignore pretty much anything below this line:

Hmm... seems to be some lack of interest here? Unless another thread has evolved discussing some type of tentative plan?

Count me in if it looks like this will happen. I also have an outback that can hold some bikes.

I think I'm going, but it is also at the tail end of a 2 week vacation and following a week of staying in the mountains. I might have other priorities.

I'm sure I'll say yay/nay by Sept 12th.

I think it's a great looking location. Lee's been talking it up for a while.

Things this trip must feature:

1) homeless slutty teenage girls
2) An endless midnight hell-march up 900 miles of 20% grade gravel road.
3) The good Professor's Mind-destroying cookies
4) Derrick's bike on the fire
5) Ben, very angry

likely yes.

On a related note, anyone want to come with me to Crater Lake at the end of September? Train to Portland (Eugene or ports South of P-town?) , two days there, two days up/at lake, two days back, train home. 8 days gone in total?

If I get my ass together I have a Nishiki touring bike, 56cm to sell that would hopefully enable another person to come on this trip? Anybody still out there that doesn't have a touring bike?

I don't think thats such a good deal, loosing Andre and Alex for Ro. I think we need to go back to the bargaining table. For one I don't have a fuc all saw, and I'm a terrible cook, fire wood gathering so-so.
I'm a pretty good drunk, which helps out in this group.

As long as this date stays stable there is still some time for me to "see what I can do"

And don't forget Andre doesn't do Ro-etry in the morning, can't recant hitchhiking stories, is worthless at tying knots and making pre-laminated maps...the list goes on.

Like they say, it takes all kinds[to make a point83 camping trip a fantastic disaster]

I'm in. I have a car with a Hollywood rack, meaning my bike +1. It's a 4 door with a trunk though, so I can carry stuff like panniers or people.

Advance Scouting Survey (A.S.S.)-Squad Report

Bob Hall & I decided that this bikepacking thing was a good idea. So, we parked in Darrington at the espresso stand / candle shop, and loaded up with 2 panniers each, platform pedals & hiking shoes, and empty backpacks strapped to our racks.

The road riding was quite pleasant, 7.x miles to the Suiattle River Road, then another 12.x to the closed section. There were about 15 cars parked here on Saturday morning. There road is almost entirely rideable with a loaded touring bike. There are bypasses wherever the road was completely washed-out. A keg-trailer wouldn't be a bad idea.

The Buck Creek campground had a locked toilet and no river access - skip it. There is a campground at Downey Creek that would be perfect for a .83 rager. A short scramble down to the river, sandbars to hang out on, a firepit, a framework for a gigantic tarp shelter (BYOGT), and a pit toilet (BYOTP). What's interesting is that everything beyond Downey Creek has been closed since the washout of 2003. It feels very post-apocalyptic. Even the lesser hiking trails, such as Sulphur Creek, are totally overgrown and wild.

Further on, the Sulphur Creek campground is overgrown and not so exciting. At the end of the road, downhill from the Suiattle River trailhead, there is an AMAZING campsite. Tons of spots right on the river. There was a large dining tent set up with a wood stove & chimney here, and enough firewood to last a week. There were several bikes with bob trailers here too. Not sure if these were the explosives workers or just heavy heavy campers. There was nobody home when we paid a visit.

We hiked Sulphur Mountain on Sunday. 8:30-3:30, for a 10 mile round trip and 4500' of gain. It's entirely in the trees (read: cool and nice), quite steep, overgrown, mossy, and the views on top are AMAZING. Be careful on the way down - the trail debris hides ankle-rollers, and the edges of the trail are soft, the rocks at the creek crossings are still mossy because nobody hikes here, and Bob fucked up his ankle quite soundly.

Bring bug spray for the daytime. Apparently the bugs go to sleep at night here. A little saw for campfires would be a good idea, too.

I saw decaying salmon swimming upstream. A black bear running down the road. A big salamander. It's a beautiful area of mountains I hadn't explored. I highly recommend it!

Anyone have any idea if the park/forest allows dogs? I know a lot of my favorite camping spots don't allow dogs because they are National forests but I would love to tote my dog along in a trailer if possible.
