Here are the pictures I took of the race and after party. I would have had a lot more and probably better pictures of the race, except it wasn't until most everyone had started their 3rd lap before I realized everyone was skipping the part of the course where I was camping out.. haha.
The best part of this photo is that this was Dan's 3rd lap. Everyone else was blue in the face and ready to die by time they got to the stairs on the 3rd lap! Dan's all smiles!
Sad that my cam doesn't take the best pictures in the dark.. oh well. First and Second (first lady).
I believe Mr. Joeball was trying to get some!
Anyway, click if you want more! |

by the .83 boys? omg. that sounds either completely erotic or scary depending on the context. i'm so sad i missed it. and i could have gotten a bell by default. my orientation was pretty fun though (as much as those things can be).
just let me know when that is and i'll mark it on the calendar. :D |

hmm on their website they say it will take more like 14 hours ... although in my experience with amtrak that could easily become 30 hours. |

Amtrack is way slow and often delayed due to the Freight Mobility Act. But, the train is WAY more relaxing. 30 hours seems a little long. I have been to Sacramento and that takes 20 hours when on schedule. It has been delayed 4 or 5 hours. According to the Amtrak website it takes 22 hours and 35 minutes to Oakland. Amtrak doesn't go to SF.
Amtrak is run by the government. They sure as hell are not making it easy (inexpensive) to take the train (unless you ride coach).
2 Passengers:
Rail Fare: $336.00
Accommodations Price (Roomette): $374.00
Total: $710.00
You have to put your bike in a box and that costs $10+ $5 to check it as baggage!
Our government sure wants you to drive! To fucking expensive to take the train. Maybe we should drive. I mean carpool.
Anyone still serious about going?
Henry, when is you spring break? |

| Long Amtrak trips without a room aren't bad. The seats are way nicer than airplane seats, and you can get up and walk around whenever you want. The Lounge/observation car can be fun. |

| if you had six people at $350 each, that's $2100. that's more than enough to buy this and a kit to run it off of waste veggie oil from restaurants along the way. |

i fucking love all the new biodiesel technology coming out lately. i sold off an 82 diesel jetta a couple years ago and wish i had kept it just to experiment on
id love to have a car with a dual diesel/veggie system set up. so cool. the oil gets heated up and then you switch over and run the fucking thing off of free veggie oil.
i was outside a restaurant the other day and saw about ten boxes of the stuff just sitting there by the trash.
i want a diesel again. my girlfriend has a 05 tdi but she'd never let me funkle with it |

If you've already eliminated 98% of your car use, switching to used vegetable oil for the remaining 2% is a great idea.
If you think switching to Biodiesel but continuing to put 20K a year on your Jetta makes you a good person, you're an smarmy NPR idiot.

they say 24 hours on the website, not 14. it ends up taking 25-30.
if you ask the luggage check people they usually have used bike boxes for free. then you just pay the handeling cost. if not, 15$ is dirt cheap.
i slept in my seat one night and since the train wasn't filled i had two seats to curl up on. fuck the sleeper car unless you have cash coming out your ass.
the bike film festival will return to sf in october. some of you should come then. it was amazing this year.
also, i plan to fix up my raleigh cruiser and my bianchi road bike (fine now even) so we will have 2 bikes for borrow if anyone wants to take the 2 hour flight some weekend.
as for cheap hotels, my house is as cheap as it gets. plus i love to play hostess, and i will make bake goods and dinner.
come crash my house again!! i promise to have more furniture! |

I've done the train ride from LA to Albany (OR). It's a long fucking train ride. Fun, but long.
Trains rock way more than driving or flying. The rail service isn't nearly as anal as the airlines are about security (yet) and you can drink more.
I used to do the SF to Portland drive pretty regularly when I was stationed down there and my first wife lived in Portland. Taught me two things: 1) 600 miles is way too far of a drive to get laid and 2) It's long and boring.
Next long trip I do though, I'm getting a sleeper car. It might be fun to rub one out on the train... |

Why would anyone run you through the ringer for having an RV? RV's are awesome for their intended use. Awesome for some unintended uses too!
I'd rather drive down in a car, though. |

That would make a choice vehicle to drive down there with! Travelling in comfort, baby! I know you only bought the RV to go to NASCAR with. Don't lie, you'll make the baby jesus cry. |

I say we get a couple passenger cars with bike racks, get 4-8 people down there for ~100 passenger-miles-per-gallon, and get it done in one long day.
But I guess if we were on the train we could play cards, or drink, or design choppers. Or have trackstand competitions. Folding bikes, anyone? |

I rocked an old English Folding20 for a while, loved that bike! Then I got hit by a car while riding on the Burk. |
