Hey all - I am going to be heading out on a great american bike tour pretty soon & would like any advice about routes.
I've been considering going down the 101 and then kicking over east on the "western express" which starts going east at San Fran & continues on through central Nevada. At this point I think the least gnarly route is to go down the "Grand Canyon Connector" and then somehow kick over into New Mexico.
This is the general map I've been looking at for larger routes.
I'm kindof stuck about how to get out of the Utah/Arizona canyon lands over into New Mexico.
Also, Googlemaps (I know it's not reliable) tells me to cross over the Cascades in Washington cut down to Boise, Northern Utah, cut the SW corner of Colorado & then drop down into New Mexico.
This would be a much shorter but much gnarlier route I think....
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVICE? KNOW OF ANY GOOD BIKE MAPS/ATLAS I CAN LOOK AT?

fly out and work your way back. Otherwise Adventure Cycling is great.
I don't know why you're considering doing the Southern Tier in summer (ugh) as I would think the central or northern would be a better time. I've done most of the northern tier from Idaho to the coast, it's some of the best scenery in the US. but if you've got a reason to be in the South, and are worried about mountains, head south from Denver to NM.
Don't let fear of mountains dictate your route; there will be hills, mountains and all sorts of ugly geography you'd never thought to ride up, and you'll ride every foot of it easier than you think.

Where would the central or northern routes be?
I was thinking about going down to Boise & then down through Utah etc. (central route?) - but this adventure cycling map shows a route that goes along the continental divide... to quote the website "The entire route is basically dirt-road and mountain-pass riding every day."
I'm on a road bike so, that wouldn't work out.
thanks for the input though - I figured going down the coast in the summer & cutting across in early fall would be cooler, but I guess it'd be pretty hot too.
