or maybe more of bike cargo fuckatardery!
Xmas tree test before snow day: the thing was box lashed on the front rack, with the stalk perpendicular to the front wheel. The stem was ~11cm out from the steerer tube axis, the drop bars extended 9cm out from the bar at the stem, with the curl pointed as far forward as possible, and the levers mounted near that crest. Even without the bars and the stem, the fork and frame probably didn't make the combo where I could just take my hands off the bike and expect to ride forward. rode 2 blocks.
xmas tree ride 2010: dragging 5 trees tied together on the pavement, bent the rear rack. I could only move forward with the granny ring on a good downhill grade, but that kind of grade was pretty much the whole trip.
4' X 6' cardboard thin foamboard, no trailer. There was this idea of a giant loop of string twisted once, with the loop cross on one side. On the other side of the board, the loop was made up of two backpack straps tied to the thinner cord that made up the majority of the loop, that when pulled tight, would hopefully make things snug. The thing went sailing and the cord ripped from the board edge through a foot of the board, then it took the bus. It probably would've been better with the board laying flatish on the rear rack, and two pieces of fatter webbing tied to the short sides of the perimeter of the top platform of the rear rack, to snug fore-aft play, and another set like that 90˚ from there.
6' long 4 X 4 wood, tied perpendicular from rear wheel on rear rack, got sneers of self-righteousness. Had I known the lashing was so snug, I probably, with another set of hands, would've had 1' on the rack, and the other 5' sticking straight aft, more parallel to the ground.
>60lbs on top of a rear rack, rode less than a block
little people sitting on front rack, on front load squeamish bike
nicer things
4' tall raspberry transplant, sticking upright, in ~1' tall pot, ~1" diameter, full of dirt and roots, tied on rear rack. had to get stalk support. the stalk was well off-center from the circle of the pot. one round of cord followed diameter, keeping down the pot against the rack, another round of cord went over that, following diameter perpendicular from former round of cord. This made four cords running down side of pot kinda equidistant from each other, looking along circumference. The two pairs of these cords were wrapped together, making two more taught hourglass shapes.
If I'm ever transporting large wheels again, it would probably be nice with an Ortliebish central strap going through a wheel section made by lapping spokes by the hub, where no matter the wheel is oriented, the strap would get pinched by lapping spokes instead of hugging the rim.
that's embarrassing enough for other people to post right?
