Modern mating rituals are, to the untrained eye, a world of uncertainty and risk. But fear not! When in doubt, go back to the basics.
Eschew complicated cultural rituals, and just be direct and to the point. Use a mating ritual.
As honed by our primate ancestors the following *is* the human mating ritual for the role of the male. Perform this flawlessly, and you will be swimming in the ladies.
1)Identify your object of desire, and ideally await a moment when she is more-or-less separated from the pack.
2)From a distance of about 20 feet away, begin snorting softly, and start walking purposefully to her, increasing speed until you are at a dead run
3)At PRECISELY 6.35 feet from where she is standing, come to a DEAD stop. by this time, you will have eye contact.
4)Orient your head such that, using the eye level and direction of your mating interest as a reference, YOUR eyes are oriented UP at an angle of 15.34 degrees, and to YOUR LEFT at an angle of 64.992 degrees.
Now, these numbers are determined after thousands of observations, so don't get *too* worried about hitting them precisely - they should be used as guides for you to refine your technique.
At this point, your lady's interest will be solely affixed upon you. Don't worry. She is evaluating your reproductive ability based on how well you perform the following actions:
5)Maintaining the same angle with your eyes (and if necessary turn your head to do this), stomp purposefully with your right foot, while lightly dragging your LEFT foot, as you make your way around in a circle, with your love interest in the middle. Also, to ensure that she is aware that this is DEFINITELY a ritual for HER, make sure to grunt out in an "uhff! Chuff!" sound, repeating whilst circumnavigating.
NEVER APPROACH CLOSER than the 6.35 foot distance that you originally stopped your initial approach! To do so would end the ritual with you losing your love interest, and all nearby males tearing you to shreds. No pressure.
6)Once you have completed 2 circumnavigations, stop, stop with your right foot, then with your left. Dip your head and bring it back up swiftly, regaining eye contact.
If her pupils have dialated to .24 inches, Congratulations! She's definitely interested. However, if they have not dialated to AT LEAST .19 inches, well, you better run fast because once she emits her pain scream, all males within a 100 foot radius will attempt to kill you.
Monica, you're fired. *Rogelio* and I will offer pointers on maintaining stable and drama free romantic relationships.
Your right. That is clearly the better choice.

Dear Joe,
I'm trying to figure out what I should do about sunscreen. I want to prevent both cancer and aging but don't want to slather something on myself every day that causes a different kind of cancer. And, I am concerned about preventing myself from producing any vitamin D in the long, sad Seattle winters.
Historically, I have used a chemical, absorbing sunscreen every day, but I'm concerned about animal studies linking them to cancer. I would switch to natural physical blocker sunscreens, but there are concerns about the nanoparticles and the cancer.
What should I be using to minimize the cancer and the wrinkles?
Sincerely,
Getting Older and Paler in Seattle
p.s. Does sunscreen even prevent melanoma?

Being one of the more fair skinned folks myself, I can understand your concern.
In my opinion, skin cancer worries in Seattle, for most of the year, are overblown. You do not need to put sunscreen on from about October through April. The sheer average luminosity in the city during this time is not high enough to cause accelerated skin damage.
However, for particularly warm and sunny days in the spring and summer, I definitely recommend putting on sunscreen for those specific days where you will be outside for extended periods of time. If you are concerned about the potentially harmful materials in your chosen sunscreen, you can either check out this site to see what's in there that's risky, and choose an alternate brand that has fewer toxins:

I use Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture with sunscreen SPF 15 every morning but I am vain and want to minimize wrinkles and sun spots. You can get sun damage even on cloudy days. I have no idea if it has weirdo cancer causing chemicals in it, probably does. I might try Yes to Carrots daily facial SPF 15 moisturizer, probably has less cancer in it.

Have you considered crossbreeding with the indigenous peoples? It worked for the Spanish and their pale skin.

dear joe,
this is meant just as a share, not as advice, but my course of action is usually to start wearing 30 spf in ~late May whenever I know I'll be out in direct sun more than 30 min at a time. after a month or two, I'll have a reasonable base tan (I guess this is where I'm fortunate), at which point I'll switch to 15 spf for really prolonged exposures, and forget it the rest of the time. basically, I avoid ever getting a sunburn (the most dangerous kind of exposure, as I understand) but don't take measures more extreme than that. I am convinced this is personally the best way to go; independently of whatever cancer is in sunscreen, I fucking hate the stuff.

I start introducing small amounts of SPF 15 into my food around April, and sorta up the quantity and SPF density throughout the summer. By the time I stop in early October I'm consuming as much as half a cup of SPF 50 with breakfast and another around 3pm.
Clearly you don't need to do this at night.

For optimal results, I recommend basting at 250, using SPF50 for a good braise. You could try slow cooking, and if you do, make sure to incorporate some onions to add a savory flavor.

+1 to Neutrogena. I normally use the sensitive skin as its all fragrance and dye free. On sunny outside days Ill use the SPF 15, though it is a little heavier.
I think we're all forgetting the most obvious, and delicious, answer. BUTTER! Of course some folks we'll argue the benefits of Crisco as a vegan alternative, but I'm a purist.

DEAR JOE:
I just spent way too much time looking at properties for sale in the city and I am curious about something... if one were to purchase an empty lot that is "ready-to-build" in the city of Seattle, could one live in a tent on said property and slowly but surely build a house? Assuming the house was built to code and all that boring stuff... I just want to know if I could take my sweet ass time, since I don't know how to build houses yet.
sub-question - am I correct in assuming that the property taxes go up each year based on how much structure (i.e., "improvement") is done to the lot?

They tax you on the land and the improvements separately, and the ratio changes in unpredictable ways. Still, taxes don't change that much year to year for the average improved single family house. So they might say your property value went up $30k, but that's usually accompanied by a similar reduction in the improvements. In reality, they're not taxing you a flat rate based on your individual property value, but rather a largely steady percentage of the overall taxes the county can collect. Some of this is thanks to Tim Eyman, but mostly I think it's just accounting jiggery-pokery.
But they don't go out and look at your property every year, so if you were to slowly build a house, you probably wouldn't see a jump in the improvements until the final permits were filed. Still, if your land value is high and your improvements low, you could see a jump or a drop year to year based on what I mentioned above.

"So if my property value doubles, my tax bill doubles too, right?
Actually, no. That may have seemed the case in the past, but especially since Referendum 47 in 1997 and Initiative 747 last year, there's not a direct link between property values and taxes.
With most taxes, a fixed rate is applied to a tax base, producing revenue for government. (Think of the sales tax.) Property taxes work the other way around: The amount to be raised is decided in advance, and the rate is set to generate that much tax revenue. Ultimately, whether your taxes rise or fall depends on decisions by government officials.
Here's how it works: Each year cities, counties, school districts, fire districts and other agencies decide how much money they'll need. The county assessor totals how much each taxing district has decided to raise, adds any special levies voters have approved, divides that total by the property value in the district, and arrives at a rate. Your final tax bill may comprise a dozen or more separate rates."
Additionally, I believe tax increases are limited to no more than 1% per year by law but I'm not sure if that refers to the total amount they are looking to collect or the amount due from an individual property owner.
