Can you get a complete directory listing at all? eg
Code:
find /whatever -type f | gzip -c > /tmp/shitload_of_file_names.gz

if so, try deleting a small number of files at a time
Code:
zcat /tmp/shitload_of_file_names.gz | xargs -n 50 rm

Check out getconf (1) and ARG_MAX which limits total length of argv (your "*" problem). Instead of find -delete you could also -exec rm {}\; which I believe immediately happens instead of full depth first search. Using -maxdepth might also help bound your runtime. Or pattern match to a leading character. In either case I suspect your having problems with fs metadata syncing. Cant do anything about that without superuser and relaxing fs constraints.

PS use df -i to get a quick approximate file count if youre not sure its working

Just to clarify, this isn't actually a problem I'm facing, but rather one that (shut up) Joe is dealing with. I just couldn't resist the trolling opportunity...

I suggested just writing a tiny program to deal with it. But I guess that's above Joe's level of fucksgivery

Currently I have a pair of Logitech Z4 speakers. I probably am looking to setup a more standard speaker system. I would like to also be able to plug in via USB. I imagine I will probably need to get a receiver and some regular bookshelf speakers, but I don't want to spend a lot of money.

honestly, you could go that route, but if you're not overly concerned with surround sound or being able to switch video with audio, I'd say just stick with a known good entity. There are many manufacturers now that have good PC style speaker setups, that offer great volume and sound great.

M-Audio has the AV32 for $80 a pair, but not USB input. honestly, unless you have an iphone with no speaker out, good ol LR analog audio is totally cool.

But hey, what is your budget? do you have multiple sources you'd like to connect to a single pair of speakers? more info can provide a more specific solution.

I think probably best solution for me will be a USB DAC

http://heavy.com/tech/2015/10/best-digital-audio-converter-dac-usb-audiophile/

I don't have anything else to hook up to this. Budget is minimal, but I think the AV32 should be sufficient.

Dear Joe,

My wife and I filed our taxes jointly and some how ended up owing the gubm't $600. What are we doing wrong? Should we be filing separately? Should we claim one or the other as a dependent?

A couple reasons that could lead to why this happened.

1)When you were married, you may have forgotten to update your W-4 forms with your employer(s), and thus didn't change your withholding rate.

2)You could be in the dreaded "marriage tax" bracket. I.e. your combined income puts you at a higher taxation rate if you file jointly, than if you both filed separately.

Some folks prefer to have the minimum withheld at work because "gubment will get interest". For those folks, honestly, I'd rather pay the govt 5 bucks a year and end up with an easy method of setting aside some cash for a nice gift every year. but that's just me.

To resolve this, experiment with filing separately and see if your combined taxation/refund is greater or lesser. If it's worse, most likely you both will need to go modify your W-4 forms to ensure that the proper withholding is done for this tax year.

Sadly, you can only claim your partner as a dependant (or vice versa) if you can show you provided for the bulk of their living and support costs for at least 9 months in a calendar year. If they are employed and have an income, you pretty much won't be able to do that. However, if you decide to have a kid, and your wife will be on extended leave for at least 9 months and not earning an income during that period, then you WOULD be able to claim her as a dependant on your tax forms.

Dear Joe

Second Onkyo receiver in 10 years just blew up on me, won't be buying another one from them. I only do 2 channels these days but I've always had Okyo surround receivers because I like Audyssey Dynamic EQ. Are there any 2channel specific receivers that come with an equivalent feature? I can't seem to find one on the googles.

Seems kind of silly to me to purchase nice equipment and then just EQ by ear, and of course even if you EQ "properly" with an SPL and blah blah blah, you don't get the dynamic adjustment based on volume that Audyssey provides.

Hate to say it, but while Audyssey is available on many different amps these days, none of those are purely 2 channel. I've noticed over the past 6 years that 2 channel vendors have decided to revert to a more simplified format, probably for "audio purity". So, sound processing technology has been removed in leiu of either using tube pre-amps and/or more high quality and more extreme precision audio design and componentry.

Basically, 2 channel tech has become more simple, but more expensive as part of "audiophool" tendencies.

Hate to say it, but these days, you MIGHT be able to fine a Denon 2 channel amp with it, but otherwise, you're mostly SOL.

I've had individual allen wrenches taken from me before, so bring tools at your own risk. I'll say this was closer to 9/11 than we are now so they may be more lax on tools these days. maybe not.

Specifically, household tools are mentioned, and bike tools will fall into that category.

As for your U-Lock, you should be OK with that.

I think the key takeaway here is this blurb:
TSA wrote:
Tools longer than 7 inches (measured from end to end when assembled) are prohibited in carry-on baggage

Also TIL someone @ the TSA has a sense of humor:

for the last one, they were using the round wallet trays as the go-nogo gauge

Dear Joe,

I am running 700X35 on my Novara Randonee. With fenders there is NO more room for clearance. Without fenders I could easily run 700X45.

A) Remove fenders, it never rains here anyway.
B) Run 26" wheels.

Thoughts?

Fenders are really not of much benefit to you, I say take 'em off and use a tyvek splash guard on your downtube. Go full limpyweta on that sucker.

fair enough. what fenders/tires are you trying to make work, and where are the tire clearance issues showing up relative to the installation?
(photos might help)

some fenders have better hardware or are thinner/radiused differently than others, some tires are wider than labeled.

I've also linked people to the RCB reacharound brackets in the past. these [might] require cutting the fender and then drilling it to install the bracket, but you can get a lot more clearance at the seatstay bridge. if you're running cantis with these, you might have to get creative and bend them to clear the straddle carrier.

dang, that just might be the thing I need to get a rear rack on my bar bike. unless, can I make this a front loader without a lot of work?

As described (45s) , you'd be lowering bb height by ~9mm. If yr not already close to having clearance issues (bb or pedalstrike) I wouldn't sweat it.

As someone who should shut up but isn't Joe, I'd recommend any of CatEye's rechargeable lights. I have the 700-lumen model and used it as my primary light source for many moons until I ended-up w/ a dyno hub + lighting setup - now it's my backup for when I need to deal w/ a mechanical or it's extra dark in the woods and I need to see where I'm looking in addition to where I'm going. I've found that in a combination of medium and low brightness modes I can get several days of use out of the battery without needing to recharge it. I also had a USB port issue a year or so ago and CatEye's customer support was excellent - they sent me a full replacement light w/ spare battery charger & extra mounts kit.

I also have a Light in Motion Urban 650-lumen light. But it seems to require recharging daily so it doesn't get as much use nowadays as it used to. Mostly my roommate uses it when he's out after dark.

Right now, the B&M IXON Core Flash says it has 1000 lumens, a measured 4.5hr light time, low battery indicator, and micro USB charging port for $80.

Hell, looking at its specs, it's BETTER than the "Light of God" Philipps SafeRide - 50 lux on a high setting for greater than 3 hours, 15 hours on 12 lux (low), AND it can strobe. and it's cheaper, AND smaller.

That's probably your best bet.

Aside from needing to be charged after every use, I've been pretty happy with my Light and Motion Urban 650.

For me a big selling point is the rubber strap it uses to secure to my handlebar, rather than the bulky separate mount most lights have. The strap did break after about a year of heavy use but replacement was only like $5. Still beats having some stupid looking mount on my handlebar when I'm riding around without a light during the day.

To be fair I liked all 5 of my light and motions but the second any of the ones I had got a little rain they all started acting funny and eventually died. Even the warranty replacements died.

Functionally a great light, especially for camping and point83 rides. My experience is that they dont make em for Seattle. I think a few have died on Archie too.

Maybe the newer ones are better?

surprisingly, for human shit, it never is 98.6 degrees when it is outside the body. By the time it hits the anus, the periphery of the human body is often cooler than the core, and the anal cavity, while not as far as the limbs, can certainly be cooler by up to half a degree F.

Now, other mammals have higher body temperatures than humans, so I guess we could say that "hot as shit" could apply to any poop that would be higher than human body temperature.
