Topic: Camp Prep

Whoa... I'm sure glad I followed those bike prep tips from yesterday. I found a loose chainring bolt on the bike I'm planning to ride.

So by now your bike is pretty much ready to go. Time to make sure that camping gear is squared away. Below are some personal items you might want to consider packing.

Sleep Insulation: Sleeping bag/quilt. Still borrowing a sleeping bag? Go buy one, now. This is a very intimate piece of gear, like underwear. These are useful in so many other applications as well. Hyperlight option: pass out by the fire

Sleeping Pad: You probably figured you could use one of these too. Foam is cheap, robust, and light but bulky. Inflatable can be cushier and packs smaller, more expensive and has potential for failure. Hyperlight option: No pad, find a duffy moss spot

Shelter: Tent, Hammock, Maybe you go DIY Tarp Shelter like Siebold, he always ends up sleeping in a car anyways. If you borrowed something make sure you know how to set it up and make sure to air it out at home afterwards (even if it didn't rain). Hyperlight option: Sleep in someone else's car or under the stars.

Stove/Waterfilter: Splitting these 2 items between a 2 person team makes sense, but then you have to rely on someone else, so make sure you trust your partner. Hyperlight option: Bring a metal mug and just use fire.

Bowl/Mug/Utensil: Even if someone happens to buy you food and booze don't expect them to hand you a disposable plastic cup that you forget in the woods. Hyperlight option: Cupped hands and pinched fingers.

Camp Tools:
-Headlamp, Flashlight, or Bike Headlight (It's dark in the woods yo!)
-Knife/Multitool (If you are more likely to cut yourself than do something useful with a knife leave it at home)
-Lighter (actually you probably won't need this because someone else will have made the fire and you're smoking someone else's weed/cigarettes)

First Aid:
-Ouchpouch/Level 1 First Aid (I also suggest and ounce of prevention so you don;t bleed in the first place)
-Personal meds (I like TUMS)

Toiletries:
-TP (It's less than 24 hours in the woods, you could probably shit-camel, but if you have to go, having TP is better than riding home with one sock)
-Hand Sani/Soap (because you just pooped in the woods)
-Toothbrush/Toothpaste (hopefully you brushed your teeth before all this poop talk)

Clothing that works well for:
-Sun(heat)
-Night(cold)
-Bugs
-Rain(hopefully not)

EXTRAS:
The above items are the basics. With enough confidence or naivety you may not have needed all of them either. You probably need or want to bring something that is not on the above list. So you should bring that. Bring something useful, awesome, unique, boring(but comfortable), fashionable, ridiculous.

Bring unscented butt wipes; they're over by the TP in the grocery store. You don't want to smell like a stupid baby.

Also: I just replaced my entire cockpit! Four days of shakeout riding ahead.

Misc: Garbage bag, Ziploc bags, sunscreen

If you bring non-biodegradable baby wipes, please be prepared to pack them out in nested ziplocs. In general there will be a bunch of garbage around, food packaging, drink packaging, etc.

I'll bring a nice heavy duty bag to assist in the cleanup, and if we're lucky perhaps those driving vehicles will transport it out. If not, that's why I have extra bungees.

Hopefully one's enough.

yes.
Also, no peddler keg. All their kegs are booked for seattle beer week.
But i'll find something.

informal poll: what kind of beer do you want to drink this weekend?

rainier or something nice?

Rainier and a corny? I've seen this group demolish kegs in the past.

But Rainier for sure is my vote. Tap is cleaned and packed.

that'd be awesome. I'll keep you posted with the car at uwajimaya situation so you don't have to carry all of it out there.

you should post what you're thinking of bringing so others can bring accoutrements.

No cup, waterbottle, thermos, ziploc bag, or other item that can't hold liquid == no beer.

I don't even drink these days, but I'd chip in $20 to work towards upgrading cheap beer into nice beer.

Kickstarter

Funding levels:

For $20, you get to say you want good beer, and get ignored.
For $40, you get to say you want good beer, and be considered before you are ignored.
For $60, you get to say you want good beer, be considered and then ignored, but Ben will apologize for ignoring you.
For $100, you can have good beer, if you'll drive it out there yourself.
For $300, you can have good beer, and a ride home from BC8.
For $3500 (Founder level), you can have good beer, a ride home from BC8, and I'll take a picture of you and put it on the forum with a stupid caption.

I am thinking of bringing kebab-makings. This would include cubed meats, sliced veggies, etc. It'd be BYOS (bring your own skewer). I need an idea of how many are coming (STAT!) so I know how long to chop veggies on Friday night.

Of all the things you just listed I would think skewers would be the easiest to acquire en masse and haul to the site???

Or did I just volunteer myself to bring a pack of skewers?

I am taking some things over to Tom's place on Friday night to put them in his truck. I will then ride my bike into Ben Country and the truck will magically appear with my things. I could definitely purchase some things that the group will need, like skewers etc, and add them to the truck pile.

Skewers are easy to come by. That's why you're going to get yourself one. I don't want a bunch of metal skewers sitting around my small apartment.

As far as kegs: how about one IPA-ish stuff and one of PBR-ish stuff. Many of us like only dark, many like only light, but many (like me) like alternating between the two within a given night.

Needless to say, will throw down the suggested contribu-$hun, and then some.

Stoves vs. water filters ... ever thought about doing a poll for people to "vote" on which one(s) they're bringing? Can you do check boxes instead of radio buttons for our polls?

Stupid babies will be smelling like baby powder and generic exertion odor. I don't want be on edge all weekend from the lingering sense that Donna from accounting is right around the corner.

T minus 3 Days till NotBC8
Topic: Fill in the Blank

Ok, so you looked at your bike and your camping gear. What was missing? Did you find someone to borrow from? Today is the last day to order from Amazon Prime and get free delivery by Friday. Better order that fleshlight flashlight for when it's dark in your tent and you're all alone.

With all this prep for yourself don't forget that Mother's Day is this Sunday as well. Better pick up a card, or two, or three.

We'll spend the rest of the day watching the shiskabob and keg planning drama in this thread.
