Question:
My coworker with MS wants to keep riding, but sometimes needs an assist. Any thoughts/input about electric bike kits?

Thanks,
sara

This is Denny's Electro Monkey:
New Commuter*

You should be able to glean information about hardware options from pictures notes, comments, and some search-engine-searchering. It's not a how-to guide, but perhaps someone else will chime in on a reputable hardware-bundle vendors.

I was lazily scouting e-bike gear and noted a rear hub from BMC that has a threads for a freewheel in case you want to rear-wheel drive in contrast to Denny's front-wheel drive rig. The V4 I believe. This will of course, limit your shifting options for regular peddling, but hey: you have a giant motor.

I have an rear hub motor, controller, and battery that (probably?) needs a new home. I'm not sure if it will ever be needed built up in its final form.

ebikes.ca is a great site to read if you want to learn about e-bikes. They've sold and serviced hundreds of kits in Vancouver BC and around the world, the guy who owns the place is a genius, and they know what works in the rain and on hills.

The Cycle Analyst is an e-bike computer that can also control how much power the motor puts out, and give you range information. The owner designed it, and it's the best in the fledgling industry.

An e-bike can definitely help your friend. It's much more accepted in Europe where bikes are seen as transportation, and less so in the US where bike culture has historically centered around racing and recreation. This is changing...

There are also a few e-bike shops around town. Two in Ballard, one in Pioneer Square, probably more. I went the DIY science-project route because I couldn't help myself, and I wanted more speed and range than what was available. But that came at the cost of a lot of time building & troubleshooting.

http://www.electricbikeseattle.com/ appears to have some great mid-spec bikes. Check them out!

Wow, that ebike is so cool! I love all the benefits to it, and it’s surprisingly affordable. We are stoked about checking it out. Thanks for the resource!
