So from time to time people recall what their induction to point83 was like. I thought it would be nice to gather these in one place. Often times in the beginning it's hard to wrap your head around what you are getting into, but after you've stuck with something for a while it's neat to look back at where you began. Take a little time to do some digging and find some key dates, forum posts, pictures and compile a brief narrative (in a document). Then once it's semi polished post it as a reply to this thread. Below are some ideas for specific details to note.

I'll go first....

Date of my first point83 ride: Thursday 4/14/2005 (inferred)
Ride destination: Golden Gardens
Ride Thread: http://seattlebikes.livejournal.com/55803.html#comments
Bike I was riding: Red Fixie with bullhorns
Introduced to point83 by: Critical Mass/Derrick
Point83 Riders I knew before point83: Lee, PJdiddy,
Pictures:

Closest picture I could find was of the April 2005 CM, I'm on the bottom right in Yellow. More photos here:
http://www.metrodigital.com/mass/2005/apr/index.html

Some more back history:
I'd known Lee since college, in 2001 we were getting into mountain biking. By 2003 the interest had gone to road bikes, then building bikes and 2004 saw experimentation with fixed gears and critical mass. I'd met Derrick and Jake(jryde) through Critical Mass and usually joined the group that rode from Red Square to WLC.

Eventually Lee and I heard about point83 putting on races and having Thursday rides too. Initially I felt like going on a slow blocking traffic ride once a month was enough. Thanks to gmail coming online in 2004 I had some achives to dig in to to find evidence. Below is the e-mail thread that lead me to pin 4/14/2005 as my first ride.

they're meeting at uwajimaya at 9pm but the racing is somewhere in
georgetown i think. interesting people and bikes, and prizes if you ride
hard.

also, i think andre and i are joining them next thursday (14th) for the
leisurely urban ride at 7pm. and of course critical mass is at the end of
the month - 29th - downtown at 6pm (udistrict at 5) and the midnight race
series continues at greenlake that same night.

just some riding options for y'all.

looking back in the livejournal though i see this:

so it could just be a random thing they picked out. mabye i'll ask.

By mid May I was pretty excited for each week's ride.

Date of my first point83 ride: Thanksgiving 2004
Ride destination: West Seattle, Alki Beach
Ride Thread: probably on live journal
Bike I was riding: 100 dollar craigslist mountain bike GT
Introduced to point83 by: A few of us from Critical Mass wanted to ride more than once a month, and we picked Thanksgiving to have a night ride on. Lots of people didn't have family around for the holiday, so we wanted to do something as a group. Thursday's weren't officially picked as a ride night for a while longer, and we didn't have a name until the ride where we went .83 miles to the J&M in a downpour
Point83 Riders I knew before point83: Colin, Jryde, Dean, Theresa, ... and a couple other people on the ride who are long gone and whos names I'm blanking on
Pictures: I don't think there were any pics from that first night, but I did recently run across a hard drive with tons of my early point83 photos from that first year (mainly 2005 pics, i'll get them online soon)

Date of my first point83 ride: Friday, September 25th, 2009
Ride destination: Greenlake midnight race
Ride Thread: this one, I think
Bike I was riding: 2004 Kona Kahuna FS/XC mtb
Introduced to point83 by: An intoxicated male atop a tall bike during that month's Critial Mass ride who invited us out to race and party at the monthly midnight Greenlake race
point83 riders I knew before point83: um, soyoung? Maybe a few others through the loosely-organized UW crew of Critical Massholes
Pictures: I wish I had pictures of the affair. My roommates at the time and I decided to do our first "Tour de Franzia" at CM that month. So we hooked-up CamelBak hoses to spacebags of boxed vino and the rest is a blur. Pretty sure my friend who now works for JJ's got away with drinking an unsheathed tallboy of Oranjeboom in Red Square because UWPD didn't know what it was. Also pretty sure he emptied his stomach contents into the street between the U-District and Greenlake when we were on our way over for the race. I for sure blacked-out mid-Mass while crossing the Ballard bridge and didn't regain cognizance until the next afternoon

I think I'd heard of point83 as early as 2008. But I never made it out on a ride nor to a race until 2009. I finally transitioned to a road bike in 2011 and a very hazy two years later started actually showing up weekly.

See the History Thread for some links back to LJ and other old stuff.

I'm pretty certain 4/14/05 was my first ride. Andre, I don't remember if you were on that ride or not - I thought you weren't able to make it in the end. I don't see you in the photos, but I do see a youthful me:

Anyhow, Andre already mined my emails for most of my good recollections.

I have a distinct memory of someone (maybe IRO Mike?) showing off on the Terminal 91 bike path and crashing into the bushes - but that may have been a later ride that spring. I also remember powering my fixie up the hill out of Golden Gardens and wondering about the creaking.

This was the bike I was riding:

I'm sure that many would also like to recant their introductions but then you wouldn't have much of a thread.

I'll stop nitpicking. Resume your adorableness. Livejournal reminiscing is the best.

Here is a photo from that link of Brads from Derrick's post, that I'm in short sleeves and basketball shorts makes me think it was from the summer.

History:

So about a year before I went on a ride I joined the forum and biked down to WL but when I arrived there was just a big group of dudes so I took one look at them said 'fuck that" and just kept on riding. It wasn't until a year later I actually got the nerve to do one.

In fact I did a Greenlake race and a couple Slow Sundays before .83.

When I posted on .83 that I was going to come out that night and would bring whiskey everyone thought I was a sock puppet because a lot less girls rode back then.

I missed the ride start and when I got to Carkeek everyone was totally blotto. The one other girl was drunk crying laying on a bench. Apparently people had been drinking Tangeraide. If I remember right it was a combo of Tanquiray and Gatorade. Thankfully it had all been consumed before I got there. I also remember leaving Carkeek made it ten feet and fell over on my bike. I quickly got up and told everyone I had hit a rock. There was no rock in sight, obviously this was before I quit drinking. Derrick kept telling me they aren't usually like that, which they really aren't. For some reason I kept coming back.

that was the first time i met you Andrew! and it's because earlier in the day at work I got the following message from Maile... (sorry Maile, but it's so cute and i figure you're no longer intimidated!)

"April 22, 2010 at 1:28pm
Subject: ride tonight?
hey jeni! my bf andrew and I are thinking about finally showing up for a .83 ride tonight because it is meant to be really nice out. he is going to be in a rush to make it from work so he just wants to meet me there, but I am scared to show up by myself! I am kind of intimidated. are you going to be there? I would feel a lot better if someone I know is there. :)

lmk!

i love this thread. it's gonna take a while for me to compose my own post.

My officemate Alexis had been talking up this weird group of bike hooligans that she'd ridden with a few times. There was this guy on a trike! A sport utility trike! And other crazy things. Stopped at 7-11, then along Alki. Helped some dude with a flat before the trail to the Lincoln Park beach. Then fire! And someone said to watch out for that Aaron fellow. Then bumming beers off of people. Then riding to the bread dumpster! Then some random guy who I haven't seen since crashed his bike into me. Then I dawdled and missed the next destination ( Hooverville, maybe?), and so then home. I think when all was said and done, about 40 miles that day, which I thought was pretty good for a Thursday night.

As a fresh arrival, I was searching for things to do in Seattle and stumbled across the FHR. That was actually my first point83 ride. I began lurking on the forum and showing up to Bike Sabbath. I eventually started regularly attending Thursday rides later in the spring.

The Thursday I believe to be my first was the night Ryan smashed his face due to the concrete lane separator collision.

Date of my first point83 ride: 9/23/2008. It was one of the largest casual Tuesday rides ever with no fixed agenda. Brandon, Kalen, Henry, Cameron, Uncle Martha Ben, Monica, Derrick, Henry, Miles, Katie, Rogelio, Greg B., that guy who had that Hollow Earth Radio show, some fixie dude who was too cool to be there on Tuesday and was reminded it wasn't Wednesday, and a bunch of others I forgot.

Ride destination: They went to that bar east of Changes, on the corner of the same block, as the first stop, then I lost them at a light.

Ride Thread: there wasn't one? Here was the following Thursday ride I stuck with until the Boxcar, if that Tuesday didn't count, http://www.point83.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6180&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=40

Ride destination: Greenlake Race of Champions
Ride Thread: http://www.point83.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7790

Bike I was riding: My old Kogswell P/R MkII, RIP Waffle Ride 2011

Also almost all the rack mutilation in those pictures is from hauling 10L of wine and all those ridiculous sandwiches the whole way on BC:V while getting rad. That along with a frolicking marathon on Blake Island was the birth of "Fancy Fred"

Introduced to point83 by: Alex Wetmore, who I'd internet-known since at least 1999 starting with fucking Usenet! (rec.bicycles.tech)

Point83 Riders I knew before point83: crossed paths with Colin and Badhill Brandon IRL, knew Rory and Jimmy from Alex's sphere of bike internet. Also had crossed paths with Derrick, Jerf, Lee, BTM, and Pete Jr. on the nerd internet repeatedly and recognized them after a little bit.

I'd come across the old livejournal group a bunch of times, but didn't live in Seattle until 2008, and only made the leap after Alex commented on his blog that he'd be taking his new self-built bike to the Greenlake race: http://alexwetmore.org/?p=600

I showed up late, ended up joining the race mid-lap and bringing in the caboose with his wife Christine. He recognized my bike from the internets before I spotted him myself.

I had somehow forgotten the connection, but on that very same ride I punched a stripper with braces!

We ended up at the Fremont Fire Pit, and some dipshit took a bunch of us to get pallets all the way from the back corner of the Fred Meyer. They took off with their pallets while I was getting started, I put my left glove on to hold the pallet, but was holding the bars in the drops with my right.

Guess which side I laid down when I missed a minor curbcut?

I ditched the pallet, but it took me almost an hour to find the firepit again, I kept going back and forth between there and the fremont bridge, but somehow was merging onto Leary right before being able to see the flames.

That's AFTER cleaning it up at home around 4AM. My hubs were coated in blood, it was soaked into my shellacked bar tape, and splattered all over my cranks, front brake, everything. I rode home on the perfect wave of drunkenness, and washing the gnar out with booze sure helped!

The wound on the medial knuckle of my ring finger was a deep hole that took weeks to heal over and there was a large persistent bruise. I kept freaking out thinking I'd chipped the bone or something, it started to feel like there was a fragment floating around in there associated with nerve pain.

At some point in late January my knuckle gave birth to a jagged piece of gravel a bit bigger than a lentil

Date of my first point83 ride: Legend has it that my first ride was the time we went to Jack Block Park and Derrick nutpunched me, (9/21/2006) http://327words.blogspot.com/2006/09/bad-yogi.html and while that was certainly ONE of the first rides I went on, I know I went on a couple before that. The first that I 327-worded about was this one one 9/7/2006 http://327words.blogspot.com/2006/09/bike-gang.html.

The first contact I had with .83 that I recall was Chris Nygaard's "Bruise, Brews, and Brewed Race," http://327words.blogspot.com/2006/06/brews-brewed-and-bruise-race.html which was in June of 2006. I got stoned with 80's Jeff and Evil Mike and felt like I belonged, so I think I may have come out for a few rides that summer before September.

Ride destination: I know we ended up drinking at the CIP and decided to go for a late night swim afterwards (when we got rousted but the cops), but as I read the ride thread it looks like we may have gone to Golden Gardens first.

Ride Thread: http://www.point83.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=34168&highlight=#34168

Bike I was riding: My beloved Rivendell Rambouillet, stolen from my backyard shed later that summer.

Introduced to point83 by: I first heard about it from Denny's friend, Erin, who worked at La Panzanella Bakery, where I'd stop for bread after yoga; I was always on a bike; she told me about this gang of bike riders she knew.

Point83 Riders I knew before point83: No one, really; I may have met Aaron at his shop once or twice.

Pictures: Only in my mind's eye.

Bike I was riding: My blue bike
Introduced to point83 by: Stephen and Nick
Point83 Riders I knew before point83: Stephen, Nick, Katie, Jenelle, Tim, Brian, Erin. Also, Kerry, Wang, and Tom via the internets

I had just arrived in town on the 24th of July, didn't make it to that weeks ride. My first ride was the slip n slide and bush gardens afterwards. Coming from the upstate, NY rides we (stephen, nick, katie, jenelle, brian, erin) used to go on, there were so many more people and it was way more organized and equally as drunk. I didn't get too wasted-faced on this ride as I didn't stop for beer beforehand, nor drink that much of the juice at the slip n slide.

My 2nd ride was the DBDH the next day... thaaat was a different story. The downhill was amazing and the post dh activities in Georgetown were really fun. So fun, in fact, that I fell over at least twice on my way back home, somehow lost a brake pad, my phone died which was my only way of finding my way back home, and out of frustration, i threw it and completely broke it. While figuring out what to do underneath some overpass (sodo? west seattle? i honestly have no clue where I was), a van taxi came out of nowhere like a guardian angel and took me back to Ballard where I went to bed... The next day was rough.

So the slip n slide and dbdh were my two days of my first Point 83 rides.

We rode through the UW wetlands, we got beer at the QFC, we got rad on the greenlake bmx tracks ( I think I ran into Tictoc?), and I drank a bunch of other people's beers. I learned that it was some guy named Joby's birthday and watched someone run their bike into a Benz. Never looked back.

Point83 Riders I knew before point83: It's complicated

Technically my first Point83 ride was a Joby ride. We bicycled to the Dog and Pony in Renton (map is in the blog post) and then back up the other side. I was so sore the next day I could barely walk. Somehow I'd twisted my ankle so grabbed a cane and limped to work. On the elevator up to the office, this guy I didn't know was like, what happened, hurt yourself riding bikes? Actually yeah, how did you know?

It was Ray. He was fixing a copier in my building and he'd been on the ride the night before. LOL.

I found Point83 after having ridden Slow Sunday and Critical Mass through the fall/winter of 2007. Eric Stata, Suzanne Hyphen, and Chris Hunter (all of whom I knew through Spice Alley - don't ask) pointed me to the rides. I'd been avoiding Point83 which was too cliquish for my tastes - SSR was an animal in it's own right and I didn't see the point. We even had our own mailing list (the Safety Third mailing list). Also, I was avoiding Henry which I don't think I've ever told anyone before. So there you go. Secrets out.

I'd found bikes and started riding/working on them after breaking up with my girlfriend Amanda of 5 years. I didn't really know what to do with myself at that point - the breakup was amicable but she'd gotten pretty much everything in the divorce (house, cats, furniture, friends, social circles) and all I had was this career in IT. Henry was friends with her through our old roommate Austin - their shitty Ska band (redundant) would play in our basement every week for... ever zomg. Anyhow, I was trying to put some distance between that life and this new one I was carving out, and blam - there's Henry right in the middle of it all. Silly I know. I guess you just had to be there.

Well, turns out Henry rarely showed up even back then, in January Gretchen had a Point83 brunch ride that went to Carkeek, most everyone who rode Slow Sunday was also riding Point83 by then (Nova, Aden, the Kats, Dave Bordley, Brandon Martin-Anderson, among others) so I went ahead and showed up. Later I think I may have brought the Wreyford Boys and Ali in after they'd split off from SSR and started their own drunker, shorter Sunday ride called Smashed Up Sundays (which amounted to them stumbling across Cal Anderson Park to a bar on the other side to watch the game). Or maybe we all just started showing up. Alas, it was through SSR that I also met Monica, Margaret, Rob, Uncle Martha, Ryan O, Nygaard - fucking J - and a bunch of others. So by the time I actually rode .83, I'd already met most everyone before hand.

Man. Good times.

Want to read something hilarious? My first group bike ride ever: http://sweetbike.org/2007/09/29/seattle-critical-mass

God, I was so innocent and positive.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Sorry if I rambled on.

wowsa, i haven't seen that pic in forever. i stole that a long time ago from the internet and modified it for seattle critical mass when i helped organize.

it's great reading the paths that brought people into the group. i ask the question "how'd you find us assholes?" lots to new people, this thread is expanding that question.

Point83 Riders I knew before point83: Kori, Nick, Colin

My first ride was a couple weeks earlier, but the first one I remember clearly was this. It was the night before the Dead Baby Downhill (but I hadn't even heard of that), and we went somewhere south, and ended coming back into downtown and bringing out bikes up to Mobius cycles. There was some sort of latenight art show going on, and I remember Denny playing footdown in the middle of the shop.

The next day, I was invited to something starting on Beacon Hill at the Church of Bicycle Jesus, which led to my first DBD.

I had been running into a bunch of .83ers at critical mass, and had heard about it from Kori and Nick, but never went on a ride until that summer. I already knew Colin from dumpster diving, but didn't know about .83 from him.

After a good nights rest I realized I likely met a few of you on this ride in Sept 2008. I see a couple of familiar faces including Colin, Kalen, Meg, Ryan... Can you spot anyone else?

I began critical mass towards the end of 2008, and proceeded to try Greenlake racing at the beginning of 2009. My first ride was a non-threaded Tuesday ride with Greg, Ray, the Wreyfords and others at the end of august 2009. We rode very fast from Red Square (numerous dropped riders), through downtown and back north to Golden Gardens to meet up the the "Nowegian Drinking Club" of Ballard. I don't know the story behind the group or their p83 connection, but they seemed inviting. Later, the Wreyfords were heading back to the hill for a night cap and I thought they were trying to ditch me because they were pulling so hard on the Burke. I held their wheels and followed them for quick beers at Amante Pizza and a wobbly ride home.

I lurked for a wee bit after finding the forum off of the Seattle DIY site. I went to a wrench party at Nygaard's where I met Nygaard and SurlyKat, after which I decided "they seem okay." So I grabbed my bike and came out on the next Tuesday, back when everyone went to or worked at the UW, and Tuesdays were still a thing. I double flatted on a road gap near collenade park, thanks to not checking my air pressure before leaving the house, rode up to Northgate for tacos, then down to Gasworks where a bunch of Christian folks were sliding ice blocks down the hill, "the rest is all Sketch.skullfucking, falling down the hill, iceblock races, pulling sketch out of blackberries stuck like a fly in a spiders web....you get the picture."

I'd forgotten about that ride as the next Tuesday, It's Tuesday, Let's Go Drink Absinthe Tonight! made such an impression on me and involved this magic moment:

Over the course of the evening, I managed to tip over six times, the first couple because it was my first night on clipless, that latter because I was dronk. Returning to the city on the BGT, I drunkenly plowed into the blackberry bush ravine/ditch along the trail. Rescued by Derrick from my prickly situation, we proceeded to Matthews beach where I proceeded to puke out the 22oz barleywine ale and all the homemade absinthe which I had so thoughtfully introduced to my empty stomach. That's what I consider my first proper .83 ride: instead of just observing, I had joined in the festive stupidity.
