This evening at Hula Hula, Derrick made his introduction by taking my phone from my hand and telling that person on the phone in front of me how I have birthing hips. AND that was the first time I ever did Karaoke.

Pics of Goolia and I on one of our first rides to Carkeek and my pink arm cast from the aftermath of the Seattle Fountain post Targys stop.

hey that was my anniversary ride! Where I brought Tanqueraide to SLU. Then made everyone go to the karaoke place a block from my house as I had a broken hand.

After randomly moving to Seattle in Jan 2012 and lucking out to get a job at a bike shop where some cool kids worked (R+E Cycles) in July 2012, I started hearing stories of this drunk bike club. I remember finding the forums on the interwebz before I had a bike here, but the stories I heard through coworkers were even more intriguing, and finally one December eve, the stars aligned for my first ride.

After meeting at WLC, we rode to a Home Depot where I heard that people were buying saws and/or firewood. Saws? For a bike ride? I realized that I had no idea what was about to happen, but that it was guaranteed to be fun. One giant hill climb and some dark woodsy trail ride later, there was a bonfire in the middle of somewhere that to me, in my new-to-Seattle-ness, was actually the middle of nowhere. I remember people saying we were near South Park, and I just thought that was a TV show, so I kept drinking and meeting lots of friendly people.

Once the fire was out, it was time to ride.... to Bogart's for karaoke! When we got there, Andre (or was it Joeball?!) handed me a beverage and said something along the lines of "Welcome to Point83. New people get drinks." It was a whiskey beverage, and I felt like my people had been found. After much singing and drinking (and jello shots!! of Fireball?) it was time to ride home. Someone mentioned express lanes... and lo and behold, they weren't kidding. I stopped up there and had a beer with a couple people, then went home.

I woke up the next morning smelling like campfire and hoarse from karaoke. I couldn't wait for the next ride!!*

*though I wouldn't become a regular rider for awhile due to some injuries and other nonsense, but that's probably another post in itself, and likely boring.

Ride destination: bridge to nowhere/party crashing/bike polo crashing/ ???
Ride Thread: http://point83.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7094
Bike I was riding: 1985 Bridgestone 700.
Introduced to point83 by: Rogelio
Point83 Riders I knew before point83: Nobody else, although I unknowingly lived in the same apartment building as Pete Jr
Pictures: yes.

I was on the Amtrak riding up from Portland after going to the Northwest Archivists annual conference. I went to get a coffee and a snack at the cafe car and went back to my seat to continue reading some Jane Austen that I had checked out from the library. Then with a thump the seat next to me was suddenly occupied by a smiling, bearded fellow with messy curly hair, a dirty cast on his hand, and a button down vest, who just said "HI."

I didn't even have a bike at that point. A few days later Rogelio invited me to a "midnight event" where he was "the MC" and wouldn't tell me anything else about it. I met a bunch of his friends at Gretchen's beforehand for a barbecue. I distinctly remember Joby showing up with his kids and R telling me he was a "Dead Baby", which sounded like a really hardcore gang, but there he was in his reflective shirt acting like a dad and i enjoyed the contrast. Before long I was trying to keep up on a borrowed mountain bike as people rode over to Green Lake and all I remember about the race was how cold I got watching.

Soon afterward Rogelio found me a bike and took it apart and took me around to pick out components, which I knew nothing about, then showed me how to put everything back together. By that point I knew he went on these Thursday rides where he hung out with "The Wreyford Sisters," who were actually boys. So that Thursday I had plans with friends but he gave me directions to ride my bike out to the Boxcar from Capitol Hill afterward. I was already kind of drunk and had no lights on my bike (of course those were not a priority to buy while out shopping with Roge; safety third!), and riding in the darkness of the Elliot Bay trail was exhilarating. A group of kids rode by me whose faces I couldn't see and they all said "HI! HI!" By the time I found the Boxcar and saw all the bikes locked up on the fence outside, I was feeling giddy.

Then I walked in and saw this crew of people crowding the karaoke stage, with their arms around each other, singing "Africa", and I fell in love. But that doesn't really count as the first ride because I didn't ride with the group that night - Rogelio and I took off from there and rode to the Theo dumpster and scored about 10lbs in chocolate.

The following week, after getting my first flat on a Thursday afternoon, I missed the meetup and again Rogelio gave me directions to the Bridge to Nowhere, the first stopping point. The first things I remember upon arriving are Derrick with a plastic jug of vodka that had jalapenos and herbs stuffed into it, forcing me to take a swig, and Cass in the middle of a crowd of guys who were eating strawberries and whipped cream out of her cleavage. I took out my bottle of Rogue pink gin, despite being mocked for drinking something fancy, and started sipping away.

From there I tried to follow the ride, and at an intersection slowly flipped off my bike while braking with one hand. I remember Lee calling out "Endo!" and feeling like an idiot so i got back on my bike as fast as possible. A few minutes later we turned off into a dark gravel trail in some woods and I didn't shift down fast enough to make it up the initial hill - got off and walked up it but by then all the red blinkies had faded away. I had no idea where I was (still don't) - more phone calls, Rogelio came back to retrieve me, and we caught up with the group at a college boy style house party they had crashed. I remember talking to Ginger and Schkott in the yard and then things get a little blurry. Somehow we got to the Green Lake park 'n' ride, where there was a crew playing bike polo. All I remember at that point was starting a game of "Don't you ever lie to me" but without the script, in which my glasses got knocked off my face and broke. Soon everyone else had left and my bike and I were both on the ground and we barely made it back to Rogelio's house a few blocks away, where I'm pretty sure he puked into an empty pizza box in his room.

perspective view of Rogelio drinking gin while I was already on the ground:

Thus I learned the phrase "problem drunk." Needless to say, although I was a bit horrified the next morning, and went home sick from work with the excuse "I fell off my bike," I was not dissuaded from coming back and that night we followed through with cheese and chocolate fondue for the midnight race. Thus began the super fun summer of 2009, well documented on my flickr.

Funny, i just realized that one of the last rides that felt like summer that year, a tuesday ride out to alki, back to bush gardens, and ending with skinny dipping in lake union, also featured the Rogue pink gin.

First ride: March 12, 2009
Ride Destination: Westcrest park
Ride Thread: http://www.point83.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6760
Bike I was Riding: Novara Randonee mutt.
Introduced to Point83 by: googling "seattle bike club" when I moved here.
Professor Dave's take on the ride: http://327words.blogspot.com/2009/03/lunar-landscape.html
The route not including to/from my home (thanks Andre): http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2631714

I knew Alex W. from mini bike polo. Also knew Jryde from there, but by that time he wasn't riding with .83 and I had no idea there was any connection. I found .83 from a google search at least 2 years prior to actually going on a ride. Lurked for quite a while.

Andre had a kickass new dirt route to through the backlot of SSCC and a hole in a fence to some sekrit dirt then to westcrest park. But first we went and got bread and went to breadfightpark. After westcrest was a sweet bomb down to Loretta's.

I broke a spoke on the ride, but fixed it with a fiberfix replacement spoke. It is still on the bike today.

On the way home, I accidentally rode straight off a loading dock. Saw it at the last second and tried to pull up and almost landed it, but rolled pretty hard. Lee was there.

This was during my Joose-drinking phase, which may have contributed to things.

The bike:

The oh-shit-loading-dock dropoff on the trail was so terrifying.

Jeni, I'm almost positive that the gravel area you're referencing must have been the UW Wetlands / Union Bay Natural Area - we came from the Bridge to Nowhere and the house party was over on Blakeley. It doesn't have much in the way of hills, but booze has a way of affecting local gravity.

I am baffled how you guys are able to remember your first rides. I recall that the first vaguely .83 thing I did was the Professor's Tour de French Fry, and then I started riding on Thursdays a few months later. But I remain mystified that you guys recall dates and details of your first ride. And in spite of all the drinking, too! Bravo.

good point, and even in my memory this wouldn't have qualified as a hill! however, knowing the UW wetlands area from subsequent rides, I don't think it was there. Now that I think about it, this moment was probably after we left the house party on the way to the park 'n' ride. looking at the map, could it have been a cut through Ravenna Park somehwere? i still haven't ridden through there enough times to know it well.

Ride destination: 9 Million Dollars in Unmarked Bills

Bike I was riding: A borrowed Magna, I think.
Introduced to point83 by: A friend who also wanted to ride bikes.
Point83 Riders I knew before point83: No one.

This was a wierd first ride. I had been back to the states for less than a month after riding through Africa. My bike was still busted and in a box. I borrowed a bike from my brother that was too big for me and rusty. Then there was you guys. The whole "eating fries until you vomit" was a bit strange. Especially when you are trying to figure out what is going on and WHO ARE ALL YOU PEOPLE. Also odd, not much riding that night.

It was six months before I went on another ride. So maybe this should be my first "real" ride? I have loved each one that came after it. Since then I have looked forward to Thursday more than just about any other night of the week.

This was a strange Tuesday ride. There were a bunch of mini bikes, and BtAH brough his rocky mountain squish bike, which I really enjoyed riding up and down the stairs at red square. So yeah.

Date of my first point83 ride: 7/9/09

Ride destination: Carkeek Park.

Bike I was riding: ye olde Litespeed. Though it was a bit more mountain bikey.

Introduced to point83 by: I met Caroline (C-Line) at a "End of Year/Meany Middle School is Closing" get-together for parents and teachers. Caroline was there as a roommate/friend of one of the teachers. We ended up talking bikes and she alerted me to the group.

Point83 Riders I knew before point83: none

Ride Thread: http://www.point83.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7229

The ride thread was labeled HORSECOCK. I drug my wife out with me for support. The Wreyfords showed up at Westlake with a side by side helicopter bike. We beat ass to ballard and stopped at the liquor store where I decided to take a piss. I found what I thought was a decent spot but the liquor store clerk (with a line full o' customers) came out and berated me. Then .83 berated me. Beyond the embarresment I thought "what a bunch of squares" Little did I know. The rest of the ride was a blur of dark carkeek trails, fire and whiskey. My wife has only been back out a few times tho...

I'm familiar with the Internet, thanks Monica. If you look at my first post, it was in the thread for your Rendezvous birthday party, but I'd clearly been riding for a while at that point. I also tried referencing my Gmail history for instances of myself emailing or chatting about it, but wasn't able to come up with anything definitive. It must have been April-June 2009.

Ride Thread: Yo dawg, you mad? Wednesday ride on Thursday!
Bike I was riding: my main, the 2007 Raleigh Cadent 1.0

This ride was my first proper Thursday ride as well as Butcher Heather's. I had ridden part of the 2010 FHR with my brother, but he decided he needed to go home halfway through because his basement had flooded with sewage a few days before... so I took him over the High School road as punishment because fuck him. Anyway, this was the ride where we came down the long winding road on the eastern slopes of Beacon Hill and rode the final few blocks to the Dog & Pony against traffic on a busy Renton one-way... "Get the fuck on the sidewalk."

The weather was beautiful and as the veterans held court at the table by the hedge, Matt, Heather and I shared a pitcher at our newbie table. "What do you mean you rode across Africa?!" I remember I asked the bartender if she had any spare AA batteries (my headlight was dead) and she gave me the batteries out of the remote for the TV. I plan to someday give that bar two fresh AAs in return.

On the way to my first ever visit to Loretta's Northwesterner, I learned where that shortcut is to cross the railroad tracks in Tukwilla. Just this last summer, I was able to find that shortcut again with another .83 member... in the dark. Adam was that you? Unfortunately, photogs Sweeney, Joeball and Andrew Squirrel didn't have their cameras this particular ride.

That next weekend was my first Girls of Summer so here's some never before seen pictures from that. I was on take "pictures of bikes" duty which is why I totally chopped Hdubs head off in her picture.

Date of my first .83 ride: The short version is 2-28-08. Long version below.

Ride Destination: Echo Lake Tavern, followed by a casino on Aurora (Club Hollywood?), and Duck Island.

Ride Thread: http://point83.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=72012&highlight=#72012 (post-ride thread)

Bike I was riding: 2006 Marin Muirwoods

Introduced to point83 by: Rob

Point83 riders I knew before: Rob

Pictures: none that I know of.

The long version: I had a few aborted attempts. On a few occasions in summer 2007, I showed up at Westlake and rode a couple miles then bailed. There was one night in particular with a crash and at least one flat before we had even gotten to the liquor store on 4th Ave S. I was grumpy and probably sober. So I think the first Thursday ride I actually made it to a stop and hung out was February 28, 2008. I almost got dropped on the way to Shoreline. Echo Lake Tavern was fun. I shared a pitcher with some people I don't remember. I didn't go in to Duck Island because I knew the last 48 was coming and I rode it home. Thanks, Metro! It seems like there must have been other rides in between because I sort of knew some people, but that was probably just from weekend stuff including the Safety First alleycat and Mercer Island brunch ride in autumn of 2007, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Ride Destination: WLC --> Liquor store on 12th and Pine --> Volunteer Park --> Cowgirls, Inc. --> Goldie's --> FFP? (I left pretty early, but I'm pretty sure that y'all ended there)

Ride Thread: http://point83.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7235&highlight=bulls

Bike I was riding: Way-too-small blue Giant OCR2 that would later fall victim to an accident involving a taxi

Introduced to point83 by: Liz Lemon

Point83 riders I knew before: Liz Lemon and Julia Goolia

A picture (there are lots):

My first ride was the first Running of the Bulls ride. It was an amazing introduction to this group.

Some background for those of you who care: I was balls-deep in the med school application process after taking the MCAT for the second time (neither attempt yielded an excellent result) and I was recovering from a nasty 7-8 months-long back injury. Said back injury put a halt to a good running habit and a promising-looking competitive ultimate Frisbee career (please stop laughing – I was actually really good and had been drafted onto a Nationals team). I was not in a good place.

Liz and I were buddies in college jazz ensemble and we reconnected when she graduated and moved to Seattle. I remember being super distraught and talking to her after my physical therapist had told me that I might never run distance again (hah!). Liz suggested that I try riding bikes with this amazing group on Thursday night. I resisted for a few weeks because nothing could ever be as good as running (a belief that I still hold), but finally gave in on a gorgeous July day that just begged for some good outside activity. Of course, this was the one Thursday that Liz couldn’t make it out, but she insisted that I show up anyway because Julia would be there with two other guys that I knew from PLU. So, I mustered up my courage, grabbed my bike lock and lights, and rode to WLC promptly at 7 to find absolutely no one because, unbeknownst to me, y’all were having a blast prefunking somewhere. I felt like an idiot for having missed the meet-up and went across the street to grab a coffee. About five minutes later, the square was taken over by a bunch of cyclists dressed in red and white, with a bull or three thrown in, a matador, a ginger dude in a dress (hi Scott!), and a deranged-looking Ronald McDonald. I timidly wandered over and was immediately offered a red sash by Monica and spent my night in awe of the absurdity of everything going on around me. Our ride eventually got to Volunteer Park, where bulls were actually chasing a few people in whites and reds and most people were lying around in the grass and drinking Sangria. We grabbed a group photo (above!), and sped off to Pioneer Square to ride the bull at Cowgirls, Inc. (although I stayed outside and talked to a few of you because I was young and innocent and skeezed out by that bar), and then rode to Goldie’s during which time I experienced my first point83 crash in a construction zone somewhere in SODO. Y’all helped me back on my bike and I walked away with a few scrapes on my elbows and a nice-looking wound in my ankle from the chain ring. I still have the scar. If all this was not enough to make me like you guys, you completely won me over at Goldie’s. The karaoke was like nothing I’d experienced in Seattle before, and you guys *danced!* I found myself having a genuinely good time for the first time in months and it was kind of the kick in the ass that got me out of feeling sorry for myself. I left around midnight with a group that showed me how to get back to Capitol Hill and couldn’t wait to ride again. This was the beginning of what I would consider to be my second best summer in Seattle (those ridiculously hot nights gave rise to the best night swimming and the most wonderful rides home). I also saw parts of this city with you guys that I never knew were there and made some amazing friends. I never said it, but thank y’all for all the good times!

I guess it’s kind of fitting that my last ride was also a running of the bulls ride.
Point83: Running of the Bulls 2013

Sorry to be so verbose. I’m extending a study break (physical ochem final on Monday!), and I miss some of you to bits. San Francisco is great and all, but I’ve been feeling lonely. I blame the holidays.

Date of my first point83 ride: Some time in July 2007
Ride destination: Seward park beach, then uh... time traveled to the next morning.
Ride Thread: I didn't post in it so I don't know.
Bike I was riding: 2007 Specialized Allez (one of those new bike hobby kits!)
Introduced to point83 by: HappyStickPerson
Point83 Riders I knew before point83: Nope.
Pictures: Nope.

I liked drinking and was new to bikes. I thought everyone was so fucking cool and wanted so bad to be cool with them. I think by 6 months later I had bike shoes, and clothes. I almost instantly hated my stupid bike. I started drinking whiskey irresponsibly (and will great enthusiasm) to fit in. I went on every ride for fear of missing out on the fun. There's just something about the group that when you first join in, you kinda go fucking crazy. As the years went by I kinda cooled off a bit, but still enjoy being a part of the group. A part time lover you might say.

I learned a ton about riding, how to get places, and maintenance, and I've even made some pretty good friends.

Then I had to go and make a human, and now ride 8 - 10 times a year.

I think mine was sometime between 2005-2006? I was borrowing a bike from Derrickito. He used to live above a bar in Fremont? I remember getting too drunk and riding into a curb.

I could be wrong because, you know, alcohol.

that was pretty much how it went! you ran into a curb near fremont fred meyer.

you rode a couple more times before the famous aaron goss incident, then it took a couple more years for you to appear again :)

I really wish I had known he was gone, I would have been riding earlier.
