Just wondering what kind of saddles you guys use. I love how brooks looks and feels but hate having to worry about it getting rained on etc (I have a totally crappy brooks saddle but thinking of getting a new one)...I also like how the Selle San Marco Regal looks...when it's not the fake leather.....any other options that include big rivets;)

I must be the only person in the world who isn't a Brooks fan.
I really like the seat on my fixie, it's a Coda Viscount 900 or somecrap like that.. it's comfy and looks right on my bike. :]
It's not at all what you want though.. haha. Sorry, I suck.

I'm a total brooks fan. My current one is 5 years old and is on it's second bike.

Prior to that, I swore by the Selle Italia Turbo. It's been out of production for a while, but you can find one every now and then.

I can appreciate where Denise is coming from about not wanting her saddle to get wet. I am pretty liberal with the Proofide and I have a water-resistant saddle cover for mine. This combination has worked pretty well for me.

Ultimately, it's what your butt thinks about the saddle that's important.

I would get this if the leather was smooth

I'd buy this one if I had no other options to think about[/img]

It might seem retarded, but I'm pretty darn sure you can take fine sand paper to rough saddles and smooth them out. Don't know if someone would want to do that to a saddle they just spent a bunch of money on, but still.

Henry, you should have called me, ass! I was sitting at home. Well, I cleaned up a bunch and went for a walk (I actually ran into Denise and her boy! I prolly seemed weirded out or something though.. I was in a hurry to get home. hah) and then my back up plans totally fell through and I cleaned more/played keyboards until late and was bored. Lamecity.

You might check this out too. Just a different color:

This is what they look like new. Why this one doesn't have the copper rivets, I don't know.
With proper care, the color darkens nicely.

Sorry, my mental stupid filter didn't kick in soon enough.

Mine is a slightly different model. B-17 Champion Special.
This one:

I'd totally go with the brooks. Give it a little love and it'll last you for years.

In Brook's defence, they do look nice if you trim all that excessive cow skin off the sides of them.

i have three brooks saddles. i got a b17 pro from jill (who upgraded to the women's specific model) that i'm working on breaking in. then i salvaged a well-worn b15 for my roadie and a wide-body (don't know the designation) for my cruiser. i cannot wait until my b17 is as broken in as that b15 is, that's for sure. so comfy.

i keep it proofhided regularly and carry a grocery bag under my saddle for parking in the rain. of course like all nice things i've also mowed it into the pavement once or twice and it's a little scuffed. i'm really kind of a bad man.

to be fair, i'm sure somewhere on the internet you will be able to see pictures of my old saddle, which i was slowly losing foam stuffing out of.

I ride a nice Selle Italia I found at recycled for $10 in the bins because it was scuffed. Of the dozen or so saddles I've ridden on over the years, this is the first one I would take off and transfer onto another bike.

I keep it supple by waterproofing it whenever I make it to Aaron's, and by keeping the pinkish red bag the newspaper comes in my bag. The bag matches my frame which makes me happy.

Denise, come to my lair, er, I mean bike shop and my minions, er, I mean emplyees (or myself) will show you our stock of Brooks. We have just about all the Brooks saddles in stock. Rain is no big deal if you waterproof it and put a bag on it when it sits out. I don't do any of that and mine is in great shape.

make that two non-brooks fans.

i love my terry butterfly. it's pink (they make black too of course) which helps but it doesn't make my crotch feel like hamburger which is a god-send especially on rides over 25 miles.

also, for nick's brook saddle i got a waterproof cover which we just installed.

Are you looking into women's models or men's? Men's saddles are much more narrow than women's and tend to pry apart our seat bones. I liken it to sitting on a crowbar and having someone wrench it really hard. Hurts like fuck. I know very few women who can tolerate men's saddles.

Anyhoo, I've gone through a fleet of women's saddles:

- I'm not a fan of Terry's saddles. She makes her saddles really short and I always felt like I was falling off the nose. I had a variation of the Butterfly w/the cutout and hated it. The rails are really short too and there isn't much chance to adjust the saddle fore and aft. I got her Damselfly titanium last year, which is longer in the nose and has a cute dragonfly on it, but I hated it. There's no way she should have marketed that for women, it's as narrow as a men's and I couldn't ride it (see above crowbar comment). I've read other reviews saying the same. If you tend to like narrow saddles and are interested in trying it I can bring it to the Thursday ride.

- I have 2 Ladies Selle Italia Turbos that totally rock. Got them for $10 off Nashbar last year. Curvy and comfy. Don't know if they still make them though. Try Nashbar or Ebay (or maybe Aaron can pull some strings).

- Rode an Avocet O2 for almost 10 years. Absolutely loved it. Had to sadly retire it.

- Most recently got the Brooks Finesse, which is their women's version of the Pro. Tried the men's version first cuz I thought it would be wide enough, but alas it was not, so it passed hands to Lee. I'm really digging the Finesse and it didn't take long to break in at all, but it's titanium and $$, so if you're looking for a Brooks you might want to try the B17. They are legendary for their comfort, and as long as you proofide like everyone says, you don't have to worry about ruining the leather.

i just picked up one by giant? i think . it was lke $30 and all others were like $60+
It's actually the most comfortable seat i've had once it's properly set.
It has the small racing look.
i'm liking it.

I think I'm going with the b17 special...I have an old b15 brooks and it's great...right now I"m using a crapy ritchey vector till I get a new saddle...so far though it has been fine....but it sure is ugly.

Personally, I like the stiff, lightly padded racing saddles. Of course the ones that I like are going to be made for man-ass. Your best bet is to try out a bunch of different saddles and find the one that is right for you. Keep in mind that the Brooks, and other real leather saddles, will conform to your booty over time. Everyone's ass is different, fortunately there are a ton of different saddles on the market to choose from.

I've never had a problem with mine, but then again, I rarely do any long rides (I've only done one century). I always seem to get chafing from the cushy saddles, but I think it has more to do with my narrow hips. The racing saddles tend to be really narrow, and the comfort saddles tend to be really wide.

Selle SLR all the way! (Of course mine is the XP model... the XP stands for Xtra Paddin').

i've been riding this since september. it's comfortable and adequate for a lady without being stupidly soft or having butterflies on it. god i hate those frilly girl saddles. damn you terry!

that and i wasn't in the market for anything very expensive (as if i ever am).
