Grey Country 9:Coming at you, warp speed, straight from hell.
Spring is in the air, blossoms are blooming, and boi'z are heading back in the woods.
Just like in years past, the idea is to ride 55 miles of rad , get drunk, sleep face down in the dirt and then ride back asking ourselves why we just did that. Let's hope it's nice out!
The Ride:
1. Srsly, Look at the goddamn route. The ride is hard, so be prepared with the essentials. There is more climbing than last year, but all of the roads are beautiful hard packed gravel.
2. The last ~16 miles are gravel. Ride larger tires than 23's. SRSLY. I'd suggest atleast 28's.
3. Pack as light as you can, as this will make the ride easier.
4. There is a 5 minute section of hike a bike. take it like a man. urine beer to the first person that complains.
5. Feeling weak, but not decrepit? Feel free drive up and meet us at the ferry. this will cut off ~15 miles from downtown. If so, I suggest parking somewhere near here.
6. See the annotated route map for food stops. Note the last grocery stop is a glorified convenience store roughly 25 miles from camp.
7. There is plenty of water along the route, but we'll need to pump it from streams.
Camping:
1. Come prepared. NO SALVATION.
2. Bring your own food. Might i suggest grillable meat that is not human flesh.
3. The campground is technically closed, so yeah, keep that in mind while starting your bonfire of roman candles.
4. I'mma gonna try to get a beer supply wagon, so we don't have to drag it up & down hills and all over hell. stay tuned.
5. your only going for one night. pack accordingly.
Car Drivers:
1. There is very little parking, so please email me if you plan on driving. benthegreening@gmail.com
2. carpool.
3. If someone wants to meet us at the start and carry some shit, let me know.
4. You'll need a NW forest pass.

how about Ben's "less incredibly crummy than last year's 20miles of rough forest road that nearly everyone ended up walking their bikes on, between pinch flats" Country?

DAMMIT, I'm busy that weekend. Well, maybe. Depends on when the race is done, I might bust ass out there afterwards.

Woosie country. Also trying to figure out how I can go on this.
"how about Ben's "less incredibly crummy than last year's 20miles of rough forest road that nearly everyone ended up walking their bikes on, between pinch flats" Country?"
I liked last years and am fine with it being just as crummy. Maybe if it is, more warning about making sure you have shit tons of water, tubes, and fat tires.
Actually looking back on last years thread Ben did say "Roughly half the ride is dirt/gravel/mud/rad. You will probably want wider tires than 23's." so there was warning. Course when he said "The ride is slightly harder than past years (a bit more hills & dirt)." might have minimized a bit.

thank you, monica.
also, it should be noted that they regraded that road the week before we rode it.
Oh boy! I have excitement for this! I gotta yes but maybe until I can double check ye olde schedule. Also because I've never done a Ben country before, I have no frame of reference for complaining like all you whiny babies.
Just kidding...I don't even need a frame of reference to complain

Team So Stoked I Hope My Derailleur Doesn't Blow Up Again This Year So I Get To Ride The Whole Thing.
(NB: Actually, it was just the shift cable frayed and slipped out, and I couldn't get to stay in the fixing bolt.)
(NB, NB: Riding home with loaded camping gear and being stuck in the 11t cog was rad in its own way.)
Ben, I know you put down the destination as TBD. Is that TBD as in "I'd appreciate some suggestions" or "I have a destination, but want to recon it first"? Because if it's the latter, I want to do some recon riding.

Totally up for some recon riding here too.
Including some weekdays, if that works better for anyone... I got me some free time on my hands.

How many Ben Country's have you missed because your bike imploded?
Didn't you show up once with a stem that was missing bolts?

Since Jeff is humble I'll just go ahead and point out that he did last year's BC on a road bike with 23s.

Close. Ben Country 3 I had a new headset installed on the bike earlier that week and the part time mechanic at my LBS who installed it forgot to install the crown race. Handling was super twitchy, so I ended up catching a ride back to the ferry (want to say it was Henry who drove), rode it back to the LBS and had them fix it. Then I rode straight to Fort Flagler and arrived less than an hour after everyone else. But I didn't miss the ride. Last year was the first, and hopefully last time.

Oh hai guise, I'm a Ben Country virgin. I've been thinking about it and I really think I'm ready to plunge into my first time. Benign or not, can we at least snuggle afterwards?

The first rule of Benign Country is you go balls deep or go home.

it's an overnight camp trip. about 50ish miles out and back.
pack what you need to survive:
-shelter
-warmth
-fix it gear
-food.
that stuff will be different for everyone. think light, try do without for 1 night if you can. the fun is in the ride and the adventure.
You could probably get away with absolutely none of that if you've got steely nerves by either not breaking down or convincing someone else to "help" you fix your bike at a mechanical, and mooching food off everyone (there's always leftovers) then stumbling drunk into someone else's tent at night afterwards. If you don't want to bring bag balm, then just don't wear cotton boxers and denim shorts. Really the only item sine qua non is your bike. And maybe the pool noodle.

Hmm. I have a racer earlier that day, but depending on location, may ride out Saturday afternoon and/or say fuckit and drive my pickup.
