well, if the k2 didn't run center pull breaks, i'd be interested as for a cross bike.

wouldn't center pull brakes be ideal for a cross bike? I'd think they would absorb much more grit and grime before jamming

They are not called "center pull"! Those are different. Like on an old 20s ten-speed. They are just called cantilever. You are refering to V-brakes (not breaks) or the generic term linear pull cantilever. Most cyclocross riders I know (and the bikes I work on) use standard cantilever style.

well, i suck w/ terminology.

my friends that ride cross have teh brakes that connect on the forks instead of above teh wheel.
my bianchi i have i guess cantilever brakes? they attach above the wheel but aren't center pull(i'm not sure why i siad that, oh, i just got off work of doing a 10 hour shift! ;) )and i'm always getting shit caught in there, and I don't even have teh clearance for more knobby tires. :(

thank you for the correction, though.

Glad you didn't take offence. So I was surfing on the City Bikes website. (bike shop in SE Portland) and on their labor page, they spell brakes, breaks.

A friend of mine used to say, about other bike shops, "When they fix your brakes, you'll be way out in front!"

Nah, i didn't take offense. I'm rather new to the bike thing, so I am happy when someone corrects me.

hah, that's amusing. i like that shop, though. it's one of the more friendly ones.

Yeah, City Bikes rules! Cool shop indeed. Being employee run, though, they can lack expertise in areas like professionalism, marketing, customer service and display. But that may be exactly what makes them cool. They should raise their prices though. Not so they can gouge the customer but so bike mechanics can be paid better. I have often thought of having a sliding scale of labor rates based on what car you drive! If you pull up in a Lexus, you get charged more. I much prefer to work on someone's bike that really needs help when they ride it to my shop. I don't enjoy as much working on bikes that are just dusty and arrive in the back of an SUV. Still everyone's money is green, right?

I don't think that would be illegal... might piss off some people, but if airlines can charge a whole lot more for flights without a "saturday stayover" (i.e. business travel), I don't see why you can't tailor your rates that way.

that's a good idea.
I mean, 6 months ago when i started riding, shit was breaking on my bike left and right and i was poor as fuck.
I rode w/ only a front brake on my 10spd for 3 months because I couldn't afford to get the back brake rerun. the shop closest to my place then was the community cycling center, which i don't like at all. They charge a lot more, unless you're a minority or can prove you're low income. which is cool, but if you're white and broke and not on state income, you're fucked.
So the sliding scale would be nice. Because usually when I'm coming into a bike shop, it's most likely me walking my shit in because it's broken and i don't drive!

but now with this job i have, i make decent amount of money, that if don't blow it all on booze, i have no excuses.
speaking of. i'm picking up a new bike friday! the guy turned it into a SS so it could sell faster, but I toldhim i'd buy it if he changed it back to fixie.
after riding my ss for like 2 weeks, i was converted to one gear. now riding my bianchi again w/ the 10 gears, i'm like, AHJSDSA, plus the bottom bracket just went out on it, i guess, so it creaks like a mother.

Say, I am going down to Portland next week for a few days. Wanna hook up for a beer? Maybe we could meet up with a bunch of people and do a little .83 style ride in PDX-town? I will be in town Monday thru Wednesday. Monday night is out as I am with my sister, but Tuesday and Wednesday are open. I head back on the train Wednesday nite. So I guess that leaves Tuesday night. Where do you all meet down there? Pioneer Square? 7 PM?

Sounds good.
Tuesday is perfect since I work graveyard fri through monday nights(or else i'd be hopping on the train up there for saturday).

I'm not sure where people hook up here, honestly, I've not gone on many rides around here w/ the bike kids. It seems everytime there is a ride, I'm working so I miss out on it. I've yet to get to a CM as it's either raining like a effer or I'm just too tired to go. But, I'll make some posts and ask around if anyone wants to go for a ride and we can meet up and go ride and grab a beer or two.
feel free to give me a call, 5035483844.

And now the guy possibly has two fixies he wants to get rid of for like $160 and $175. now w/ this big $900 pay check... haha. If i didn't have to pay the new deposit and loan money to my roommate for a couple days, and the fact i should be saving for a new roadbike as I think my friend I are talking of doing the STP this year.

Anyway, yeah. so yeah, you can see me trying to ride a fixie seriously for the first time(i've only rode one slowly for a couple blocks, and the frame was way too small for me).

Okay- I'm selling the Pista! I want to build out a nice road frame instead of a fixie. Stupid old sports injuries.
I'm way bummed, my coworker sold his K2 from earlier in this post to MY BOSS instead of me. It was damn pretty too, and it's going to be a weekend-warrior's bike now. What a shame.

It's the frame I won at the Cranked race. Fork & Frame only, but it is very clean. just had the forks trued and it is drilled for a front brake. It's been riden a bit but the finish would grade to an A- IMO. 54cm center to center. $250obo or trade for a nice road frame

yeah, too small for me as well. Coupled with a bumn knee, it's not the bike I need to be spending money on.

my (near) new FSA wheelset however... that's money well spent.
