Hey all, Kara and I are in the early planning stages of a bike tour to the redwoods around the end of July. Has anyone done this trip before? Does anyone have any advice/maps? What's the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow? All important questions and any/all advice will be gladly appreciated and taken into consideration.

If it works with your itinerary/distances, Howland Hill Road (Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park) is a fantastic gravel road through the redwoods. It has some definite elevation change to it, and I've only driven the road myself, but it would be a fantastic chunk of a bike route. No shoulder or anything, you get really close to the trees and "in" the forest. No RVs, and few cars when we were there as most stick to the paved highway.

What's your big picture? Ride there, ride back? Take Amtrak there, ride, take Amtrak back?

Anyways, you might want to look into the Adventure Cycling Assoc. Pacific Coast route, Section 3. You could ride the above mentioned roads and use the ACA route to turn it into a loop. Start and end in at the same place.

Here are the 4,407 journals of Crazy Guy On A Bike tours with the word "Redwoods" somewhere in them that you requested.

And here's Ryan's photo set of his tour with Gretch and Margaret.

Here is The Redwood Plan. They are currently playing shows in May, not July...

One thing that parks rangers encourage is for you to gouge out your own piece of history and take a hunk out of one of the big trees. It's a tradition!

Dear Redwood Mafia: I have Joe's address if you'd like me to post it so you can go visit him some evening with a tube sock filled with rice.

Let me know.

I just picked up a used copy of book called cycling the pacific coast. this particular edition is from 1994 but I figure we'll supplement it with modern adventure cycling maps. Anywho...our current thought may be to just do the Oregon coast, (general opinion is that WA coast is boring) down to crescent city/redwoods and then back up to Eugene to catch the Amtrak cascades line back up to Seattle.

Seems like either catch a ride to Astoria, down the coast and back to Eugene or maybe bolt bus to Portland, bang out to the coast via Tilamook forest?

any thoughts on if missing the first half of the Oregon coast be regrettable?

the Oregon coast is f'ing awesome. get at me sometime and I'll tell you the best ways to get out there and where to go camp. there are some great spots on the northern coast (Cape Lookout, Pacific City, etc.) but in general if you start your trip from any point south of Tillamook it's all good.

only suckers take the highways to get out there from Portland. :)

the easiest way with the least amount of cars is this route: http://www.strava.com/activities/8911957
(check w/ ODOT that they've finished repairs on the bridges on Little Nestucca River Rd. before you use that exact route; there may be detours)

also fun is the Nestucca Back Country Byway: http://www.scenicdrivesusa.com/node/165

or if you're feeling lazy, ride the Wave bus service to directly to Tillamook from Portland. http://www.tillamookbus.com/
