My fellow Americans: next weekend and Monday are Memorial Day weekend. That means unless your Boss Hates America and wants to dishonor thousands of service members who made the Ultimate Sacrifice to ensure our Freedom, you have Monday off. (Feel free to shame them on my behalf. If they still refuse to give you Monday off, I'll take a picture of myself and all of my sailors with sad faces because your Boss Hates America. You can use this as a bargaining tool.)
Likewise, I am departing on my cross-country bicycle tour the weekend after if everything goes according to plan. So I intend to go bicycle camping to shake down some gear.
Therefore, I plan to lead a bike camping trip. I realize some of you will still be Outbacking in Oregon, and this is a noble venture that properly respects my fallen comrades. But the rest of you are not yet fulfilling your patriotic obligations and should come bike camping with me.
WHERE:Scenic Beach State Park, Seabeck, WA. It has secluded hiker/biker spots, flushing toilets, ample water, and coin operated hot showers. Here is a map of the camp. Go to the hiker/biker sites (P1/P2).
WHAT: Saturday - Depart Seattle on the 0935 ferry to Bainbridge. Ride to Scenic Beach State Park via backroads. Seabeck Pizza. Yellow Submarine. Watch an actual submarine go by. Choose your own adventure. Route Map (36 miles/3 hours) Sunday - Ride home if you don't have Monday off. Otherwise, ride dirt roads on a special adventure to Dewatto and Tahuya. Back to camp. Route Map (62 miles/5+ hours) Monday - Ride home. Pretty much all downhill via Holly Rd to the Bremerton Ferry. You could be home by lunchtime. Use the Saturday Route Map (17 miles/1.5 hours)
LOGISTICS:
Saturday, you'll have opportunities to resupply at Bainbridge (grocery), Poulsbo (grocery), Silverdale (convenience store) and Seabeck (general store). I would not count on a huge selection at Seabeck, however it is the closest beer stop.
Sunday, bring enough water/snacks to get yourself to Belfair at mile 45 where there is QFC and a few small restaurants. You have beer opportunities in Belfair (16 miles from camp) and a convenience store at Camp Union (about 4 miles from camp).
Monday, you have convenience store opportunities at Camp Union (5 miles from camp) and Holly Road (8 miles from camp), groceries at Kitsap Lake Red Apple (14 miles from camp/5 miles from the ferry) and restaurants at the ferry while you wait.
Are you with us or against us?

Probably can't make it, but, does sound like fun, especially Sunday. Way back when during my fisheries career, I did some work collecting gravel samples in creeks near Holly, Dewatto, Tahuya, etc. Pretty cool area. The western Kitsap Peninsula has always seemed like one of the most isolated, wild parts of the whole Puget Sound / Hood Canal region.
I just now Googled "Dewatto" for the first time. One thing it says on the Wikipedia page for the Dewatto River: "The name 'Dewatto' comes from the Twana placename which implies the presence of spirits causing mental derangement near the stream's mouth."
Sounds like a place Point83 would feel right at home, haha...

Maybe? My plan was to leave way early, and ride fast, I have a feeling I am going to be scheduled for a shift Monday since it is my last week at work, and they want to ruin my fun. If I am working Monday then I will want to leave ASAP on Sunday and ride fast. Play it by ear?

I'll try. Can you post a likely meet up point/time for someone riding from Bremerton?
I'll update the thread OP in a few moments. But basically, the route we'll take will have us arrive in Bainbridge at 10:10. It's 35 miles to the campsite. That's a total ride time of three hours at a reasonable touring speed of 12 mph. So figure for a 1 pm-ish arrival.
If you ride straight to the park from the Bremerton ferry, it's basically 2 hours to the park. You could ride directly there from Bremerton via Holly Rd (LONELY!), or you could take Traceytown Rd to Silverdale and meet us halfway to the park (only HALF LONELY!).
Matthew, What time are you planning on starting the dirt riding on Sunday?
If I knew you were coming, I could imagine a scenario where we waited a reasonable amount of time to ensure that you arrived before we left. I'd like a morning start, 10ish or so if possible. That gets us back to camp at dinner.

Sounds like a plan. Go to the upper level observation deck (one level above the main passenger cabin) on the forward end.

This sounds fun, I might join. What's Sunday's dirt section like? Are we talking knobbies or will it be fine on slicks?

The SI derived unit for a given road's conductivity to a given cyclist (commonly called its "radness" in the literature) is called the Greening. It is defined as the distance one angry hippy could cover per unit time on a reference tire, a 700x23 slick, at a reference slope, level. Its fundamental units are m * s^-1.
The dirt sections are a graded, crushed gravel. At its smallest conductivity, it is approximately 4.5 Greening. You will not need wider tires than the reference tires, although they may provide some small benefit.

Minor change in personal plans thanks to the holiday weekend ferry schedule.
YOU WILL STILL TAKE THE 9:35 AM FERRY TO BAINBRIDGE.
I will meet you there at 10:10 (the only ferry early enough for me to catch you leaves at 7:05 am from Bainbridge).
Also, if you need to call me, my phone number is in the Seattle area code. The first four digits are 790. The last four digits are 8791.

Love it.

The park ranger at scenic beach yes but no'd us. Some folks from Swift/Get Lost crew are at scenic beach in spot 17. They have some room of any stragglers show up there. We're currently en route to Green Mountain Horse Camp. If its full of horses well probably be on the DNR land off a fireroad.
Edit: green mountain is mostly empty. Setup in the horse camp for the night.

I'm headed out to provide reinforcements. 1110 Bremalo ferry.
-Donavan, Shahan and I miss the ferry
-Unhelpful ranger at Scenic Beach gives hiker-biker sites to drivers
-We head to Green Mountain, Matthew & Ajat go home
-Share the fire with Jeff, the homeless guy living at the horse camp
-Jeff tells story about watching his girlfriend's head pop like a canteloupe in a car accident
-Donavan and Suzanne head out
-Rez, Aaron, Dada and I get lunch
-Rez and Aaron go home
-Dada and I go back to camp and discover that Jeff the homeless drunk guy packing heat has stolen half our gear, we take it back
-Shahan arrives
-Three of us go back to Scenic Beach because sketchy
-Get Lost crew report that the hiker biker spots were empty after all
-Home.

Actually when he first showed up we offered him whisky. He said "No, whisky makes you do crazy stuff. You'll end up going around pulling people out of their tents in the night." Beat. "That's why Ive got my Vodka here" in an aluminum water bottle.

Hobo Jeff: not a fan of pulling people out of their tents at night, big fan of pulling gear out of tents in the day.
Scenic Beach was rad, thanks to Shahan and Garth for convincing me to stay another night.

Huh, well I'm glad that 'kind of' worked out for ya'll. I was skeptical about the state park destination on a holiday weekend. Hopefully Jeff's stay is short lived, he'd do well to work on his Hobo code (of conduct) as well

I wouldn't count on it. We got his life story over the campfire the night before he stole from us. He used to be one of the horse campers and owned property in the area. He's close friends with the camp host's husband, who basically just gave a knowing look and a shrug when we told him he had a thief staying at his campground.
When we got to Scenic Beach I mentioned to the ranger what had happened. He knew of Hobo Jeff and his red truck, said he had been there recently. Considering Green Mountain is free, and he's safe to do as he pleases there, I'd expect him to be in the area for a while.

The hiker/biker sites at Scenic Beach are quite small. Our site was maxed out with 3 tents. Even if we had both sites it wouldn't be suitable for a large group unless we supplemented with a couple of car camping spots.

Did Hobo Jeff steal your gear and stay there thinking you wouldn't notice??

Either that, or he just knew he could get away with it if he got caught. On Saturday morning most people packed up and went home, but Garth and I left some gear behind and pedaled into town for lunch. When we came back, a bunch of stuff was missing from the picnic table and inside my tent. We walked over to Hobo Jeff's campsite and there it was, sitting in plain sight. Hobo Jeff wasn't around, so we took our stuff back then went to find the camp host.
We found the host's husband (never met the actual host) sitting at a fire with Hobo Jeff, who said he wasn't sure if we were coming back so he was keeping an eye on our gear for us. He followed us back to our campsite to give us the gear, but since we had already taken it he just hung around for a bit drunkenly talking about how he isn't a thief and was only trying to protect our stuff. Funny how he protected my sleeping pad by leaving it on the ground next to my tent, and protected my pannier by emptying its contents onto the picnic table and then taking the pannier to his own campsite. There were a number of things going through my head at this time, but none of them were going to help the situation so I proposed we pack up and go find the Get Lost crew at Scenic Beach, which worked out perfectly.
Get Lost crew report that the hiker biker spots were empty after all
And on that note, I'm going to nasty-gram Washington Parks. The senior park ranger was basically Douche-tron 3000 to us; his prime directive only states "screw the cyclists". The fact that he was clearly contrary to established WA State Parks policy simply because it was easier for him is too much. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because it was a busy holiday weekend... but it looks like he didn't deserve it.
