The JERFENING is a 6 day bike and camp trip, Seattle to Portland via Long Beach/Astoria. The ride 50-70 miles a day, with vehicle support. I'm not going to Iowa this year so I'm going to party my balls off on my bike here. We're riding short to be in Portland by Thur/Fri so that my wife and friends can get back to work Saturday, and others can take the time to enjoy Portland at the end. I want this post to generate interest, I know it's a long ways out. I'm not taking an official roster until closer to late May/June.
When: July - Saturday the 18th through Thursday the 23rd
Meet: Pike St Hill Climb Steps 7/18 @ 7:30a, to catch the 8:30a ferry to Bremerton
Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7359944
Support: I will have a car driving ahead to over-night spots , and half-way spots if the day is long enough to warrant one. You can put some gear in my car day before, but space is limited so let's not get carried away. This will allow us have chairs at camp, sag if anyone wants too. The idea is that this non-rider driver I get will also our dinner for the night. We'll all put in cash so we have nice things waiting for us at the end of the day like food and beer, planned dinner and whatever gluten-free crap you may need. I am accepting applications for this driver. This Driver can bring a buddy, and you'd come back to seattle with me and Amber. If I can't get a driver I'll ask people to volunteer a day to drive to camp. You can ride backwards and meet on route if you want. Or sit in the woods and drink a bunch. Choose your own adventure.
Camping: We probably can't just amass upon some state campsite will-nilly so I've reserved 2 sites at the 3 campgrounds that actually take reservations. I'm sure we can bend the rules a little bit. All sites are at the end of the respective grounds, with no one behind us so we can maybe get creative. 2 sites are on beach-side grounds.
Mileage and Overnights:
Saturday 70 miles: Mount Molly Campground - No reservations
Sunday 70 miles: Park north of Willapa Bay KOA - No reservations
Monday 45 miles: Cape Disappointment - Reserved
Tuesday 50 miles: Nehalem Bay State Park - Reserved
Wednesday 70 miles: Big Eddy Park - Reserved
Thursday 55 miles: Portland - Go home or get your own hotel
I planned for and registered for about 15 people to come, and that's what I reserved for in camping, and who I'll take responsibility for. However I think if you wanted to come for day 1 then ride home, there's really no limit since it's just in the state forest and you can kinda camp anywhere. Lastly, it's no BC or Joeball Mt. This is a pretty loose ride. Let's stop a lot, drink lots and lots of beer. Maybe have a shower day 3. I'll have stops planned but always open to suggestions. Monday and Tuesday are purposefully short so we can turn up the weird beach side.
Again, I'm just getting interest now. The route won't change, but I'd like to hear ideas for accommodations over 15. I have 3 confirmed including myself, and 5 or 6 maybes. After 15 I won't say you can't come but you'll need to think about your camping and gear if I can't fit it. I'll post again and open up the roster closer to end of May or early June.

JERF. This sounds awesome. I have a one way ticket to New Mexico on June 28, for a thing that ends July 16. If I do things to be back here by the 18th, I'm of great much interest. Last time I tried to rideshare back to Seattle, it took... longer. But this sounds rad, and I'm funemployed for the summer, so I'm subscribing to your newsletter.

Talking things over with the ladyfriend - MIGHT be able to pull off that week, and could be driver support for most days. Will have a solid answer by this weekend.

brotip: don't ride on Hwy 26 on the way from Banks into Portland.
this route gets you off the highway onto some more enjoyable roads.

There is no canceling this. If I'm going by myself, this is fucking happening. 2 nights ago I spent the evening taking notes on the various foil/dutch oven dinners we'll make in case it's 2 or 10 of us.
I can tell you it will be at least me, my wife Amber, and my friend Mike.

Have you been thinking about this ride? Did you forget? Maybe you need to be reminded?
The time is nigh to start considering coming with me.

Ok, marking you in as officially in. As far as in the group, I've got Scott, Moira, and Langston as interested/maybes. I have a handful of non-.83 people as interested/maybes as well.
Including you Axel, as of this post there are 4 of us confirmed for the whole ride. And by confirmed I mean they've told me they've scheduled the time off work.

I actually had this other idea of not taking 26 from Banks to North Plains. It's kinda like Rob's idea but this is my idea so it's better in every way, which I just now committed. (Same link.)

When your route is leaving Shelton, WA, you've used the shortest route out of town. I recommend not doing that. You have to cross US-101 (4 lanes, 65 mph, no traffic light) if you do. Instead, take the marked detour. I've rode this detour on the old RAPSODY event ride. It's much, much better and never crosses US-101. Also, be advised that even though Google thinks there is, there's no bike path there. You're on the highway shoulder (although as little as possible if you take my suggestion).
When your route leaves Astoria, OR, I recommend you take my detour. Adventure Cycling just changed the Transamerica route to use the alternate Lewis and Clark Rd. It's a minor change, but the pavement was fresh last summer, and the logging truck traffic was minimized.
When your route goes through Cannon Beach, take the Pacific Coast bicycle route detour. It's marked as the "bike path" off US-101 just after Old Cannon Beach Road, then down through Elm Ave, then onto Hemlock St. You avoid some high speed highway, get some nice views of the iconic rock stacks, and ride past restaurants and general stores if you need a resupply.
I rode it last year as part of my tour last summer, and A+ would ride again.
Likewise, there's a rest stop on the side of the road at what's listed as km 379 on your current route (just after the cliffside trails at Oswald SP/Treasure Cove). There's an absolutely stunning view at that rest stop, parking spaces for the support car, and it's at the top of a long climb. Stop for a group photo.
Last, I added an alternate campsite east of Manzanita, OR. Although I stayed in Rockaway Beach (the Transamerica continues south), I heard from several cyclists going the other way that Nehalem Bay state park can get filled quickly. If it does, this is a bail out option for you. There's six hiker-biker specific sites, water and vault toilets at this alternate campsite.
I'd love to join you, but I'm already touring from Ithaca to Montreal that same time. Pédalez bien les mecs.

I've already got 2 spots at both state parks, at the far ends of the grounds even. I had them reserved before I even posted this! I am concerned about the first to nights, as they simply don't take reservations. Amber wants to go to the ocean anyway, so we thought we'd drive the route and scout those sites in case we have to do it Ben style, and camp in the bushes after we fight a bear.

Am I going to need to require a Doctor's note from you in order to let you come?
And no, Dr. Bott/Dr. Ito do not count.

How about Dr. Roger Porter? I take most of my medical advice from him.

As a second opinion, I endorse Rogelio Portillo attending this event with reservations, insofar as he should follow the prescription advice of my colleague, Dr. Roger Porter.
