what's the best route between those two places?

goal is to head south and hook up with the Iron Horse trail on a return trip to Seattle.

I'm somewhat familiar with Old Blewett Pass and would love to incorporate that into the route assuming that traffic on 97 isn't too horrible.

crossing I-90 at Vantage seems less than appealing and I'd prefer to stay on the West side of the Columbia if it makes more sense to do so.

here's what I'm currently working on:

discuss.

I wish you could ride from Hwy20 to Stehekin, but that's the PCT and it's closed to bikes :( http://www.nps.gov/noca/planyourvisit/bridge-creek-trail.htm

Some fun detours off 97 include:

Apple Acres road just north of Chelan

Swakane Creek FR 7415, south of Entiat, connects to Derby Canyon road FR 7400 to Peshastin. That bypasses some of Hwy 2, at the expense of more climbing on dirt roads.

The I-90 bridge at Vantage is indeed a deathtrap, and there's no gas station on the East side to ask kind strangers for rides.

Yeah, I guess the pastry company would be worth it.

If you're into suffering that much, there's also a dirt road route from southwest of Chelan to Ardenvoir on the Entiat river road. You could continue up & over to Leavenworth. Goes up quite a bit.

Ben set me up with a route up into the Teaneway when I was trying to go from Seattle to Leavenworth. The crux was a couple-thousand feet of elevation mountianbike/dualsport/horse trail that took me over a saddle and into the Hwy 97 drainage. That and the side roads that connect out to Teaneway Rd from Cle Elum.

Shit ton of gravel riding, but you like that stuff and it kept me off 97 for other than a mile or so before the turnoff for Old Blewitt Pass Rd (which I skipped to ffwd to Leavenworth & beer)

No good route ideas, but be prepared to abort any off highway plans at a moment's notice due to wildfires, particularly between Chelan and Wenatchee. That area seems to burn every year for weeks on end.

Here's my suggested route.
You could also add the bit that langston is talking about. it's super rad all the way into cle elum that way.

I will warn you, the entiat summit road is a son bitch. Bring water.

Mud creek and old blewitt are a must.
