I've had a few people tell me they'd ride a bike to work if they were able to do so without needing to change clothes, or be all sweaty when they got there, so I suppose this addresses that problem. But I just don't understand the desire for an electric assist bike outside of large or heavy carrying requirements.

In a sense, I agree in that part of cycling is to be more active.

This really appeals to the folk who WANT to be active, but don't like the whole active part of active.

It's fantastic in the summer but I'll be honest, it kinda sucks during the dark winter months, especially when you have a headwind in both directions and it's raining. I'm planning to put an electric assist on my Cycletruck eventually but right now I end up relying on my tiny Honda Civic more often than I would prefer. With an extra boost I could more easily keep up with cars on the straight roadway instead of always taking the twisty circuitous bike trails.

I can't hold it against anyone with a long commute that wants a little boost to keep an average speed above 20mph to get their commute time down or get them up one of Seattle's hills with 2 panniers full of groceries.

Sure, electric bikes (especially this one) are silly for recreation and going to coffee shops but for those that are planning on ditching our cars eventually these could allow more fun in the saddle without sacrificing time.

Which, ultimately will be good for everyone...even if my current commute-nemesis is an e-bike rider who tries to pass on the 11th ave hill without leaving the bike lane. I hate that fucker, and his yellow vest, and probably his little dog too.

I can tell you why I built one.

I go sailing 1-2 days per week after work during the summer. The marina is in Ballard. I work in Redmond and can get from Redmond to Montlake in 15-20 minutes on the bus. Sailboat racing starts at 5:15 to 5:30pm. So an e-bike that gets me from Montlake to Ballard in 25 minutes (vs 35 minutes) without being crazy sweaty is the difference between driving to work ($10 a day in tolls and fuel) or riding my bike.

The e-assist is also nice if I go out for beers with the crew and need to ride up Golden Gardens afterwords.

It worked for me, my cycling miles were up and driving miles were way down in 2015 and I give a lot of credit to the e-bike for that.

My e-bike is a bit different than this one or others. It matches the power that you put into it instead of providing a throttle where you can just have it go. I think of it as a turbo instead of an electric motorcycle, it lets me ride up GG at 15-16mph or along the city streets at 20-22mph instead of climbing GG at 8mph and riding the city streets at 15-18mph. My bike rides just as well with the e-assist turned off, and so I often will ride it that way when I'm with others or not in a rush.

The e-bike is just another tool that lets me avoid using the car. That's worth it to me.

Also, I can tell you from experience that the e-bike in that campaign is unlikely to get 30 mile range unless the rider is providing a good amount of power. My guess is that most riders will get 15-20 miles out of the system, much less if they don't want to pedal.

I get 6-10 miles per amp hour of capacity on a 36v battery. This is with me riding at my normal output (roughly 200 watts). If I try not to get sweaty at all (like riding my bike wearing a suit to a wedding, which I did last summer) I get more like 3-5 miles per amp hour. My miles per amp hour numbers are much higher than most e-bike riders judging by forum posts.

That's what I meant by understanding a need for a electric assist bike; getting to work and not being totally gassed, or within a short amount of time. Time is always my consideration when decided to ride or not.

That SS e-bike just doesn't seem practical, but hey bikes are fun. I'm sure I'd enjoy taking it for a spin.

I really like the idea that an e-assist means the difference between riding vs. taking a car.

E-assist seems to flatten hills and negate headwinds, and those are two factors (beyond overall trip length) that can really kill a commute or short trip for some people.

I hadn't really thought of it until reading this post but a cargo e-bike is exactly what I need to better access work sites in Ballard-First Hill-Madison Valley while traveling with tools and supplies. I currently do it with a combo of bicycle, car2go and Zipcar but an e-bike would make the distances/weight/hills much more palatable. Now I just need to convince the boss on the investment. And find the right bike.

A little bird told me Davey's shop (G&O) outfits a fleet of electric cargo bikes for a Seattle company. I wonder if he has any insider info on getting one of those for a discounted price.
Alex from 2020 cycles is also opening an electric cargo bike shop (Electric Lady) up in the Central District soon. I'm sure he would be excited to move some new stock in the form of a company vehicle.

Many companies that buy electric cargo bikes often use it as an advertising billboard so you should consider mentioning it as a selling point to your boss.

If my office didn't have access to showers I would never ride to work ever. Just wanted to echo that sentiment.

In my last office I would take the Sounder train to work and then ride 30 miles home, but that still sucked because I had to get up way early to catch the last train south.
