Just figured I'd poke around a bit since I gotta get a new chain for the touring ride pre Ben Country.

I've usually defaulted to the Ultegra chains and they've done me proud over the years, but was wondering if there are other options that folks would recommend. The KMC x10SL seems to be a new contender, and I'm debating trying one out to see how it works.

Thoughts?

in that same boat. i gotta get the truck an oil change before ben country.

what are peoples thoughts on Shell Rotela 15-40 vs Mobil Delvac for your powerstroke 7.3 engines? i always run rotela T exclusively, but last change had to use mobil as alternative brand as nothing else was available, not quite sold on it. do people have a reliable backup that they use, or is there anything to definitely avoid?

I have a shimano chain on my touring bike, and a KMC on my single speed. The KMC is cheaper and just as durable, but I tend to like the Shimano master link way better. It's easier to install on the side of the road.

Joe, just throw on an 11s chain so that if you upgrade you'll be all set.

Make sure to take the chain apart daily to clean and grease the inside of each link.

are sram and shimano chains interchangable? I've always wondered.

I do that already! It's about a 5 hour process, and getting the pins back in is a bear, but better safe than sorry! I don't like mixing my chain dirt between ben country's.

Though it might only take you 5 hours, that's broken up by the overnight soak. Also, you really should be using new pins, (or SRAM powerlinks if SRAM chain).

ShelBroCo has kits for either:

SRAM 9/10/11 chains are the only ones I specifically recommend against, their wear life is half to a third of everything else and somewhat unpredictable. They're not quite cheap enough for the $/mile ratio to work out, and it's pretty easy to kill your expensive gears with a chain worn past 1%.

The cheapest/bestest idiot-proof setup is to get a nice Shimano chain, and join it using a KMC "Missing Link"

All currently-available 10 speed chains have the same dimensions and are interchangeable. They also work on Shimano 9-speed drivetrains and are more durable than the original chains, a decade of further engineering trumps slightly longer pins.

I've snapped a new KMC on less than 100 miles going uphill in QA. 2 shops confirmed it was manufacturing defect. So meh. The fred-pinion is serving me well.

But in reality, do you care much about your chain if it never gets used anyways?

Does it really matter what kind of chain goes on a display bike?

For maximum performance, you might consider lightweight advanced polymer chain. As you know, rotating mass affects your acceleration much more so than static mass. Also easier to lift onto your wall display stand.

Bonus is that it's food safe.

Edit to add: and of course you can also go find a plastic headset for even more weight savings!!1!

Excellent suggestions people, but I opted for a different chain:

I think this one should work out OK for the ride to BC.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a single speed chain?

Always used KMC K710. This is a purely esthetic preference.

God damn it why do they have multiple standards? I'll need to double check.
