best, most affordable, most durable all around riding pants that can be hand in less than 2 weeks.
black is preferable.

I like the Levi's Commuters, but they're basically drainpipes. The right amount of stretchy, and they don't totally suck when they're soaked.

EDIT: this is on the basis of getting them super cheap. You can usually find them somewhere for like $30. (use google shopping or something)

Pants? in the summer?
I'm a big fan of Swrve stuff but it's not cheap.

If you're in the 31-34 waist size and need something real quick I have two pairs of synthetic Portland (now Oregon) Cyclewear knickers that I haven't worn in years because one waist is too big while the other is too small. They only made them for a couple years 2008-2009 before discontinuing the line and focusing exclusively on wool jerseys.

Polyester w/ stretch. Hem them into shorts. Best riding shorts ever. Cheap, durable, very good in the rain. Sizing runs small, so select a waist size 1-2 inches above what you normally are.

I wouldn't mind trying those 31s, Andrew; I don't think they'll fit Ben.

Previous versions of these are awesome:
http://www.mountainhardwear.com/mens-chockstone-midweight-3-4-pant-OM5826.html

I have some that are 7 or 8 years old and still behave like new, despite being what I ride in most of the time.

It's up to the reader to figure out who still has some in stock.

They change the fabric and cut every year or so as well. I really like some of them I have, and not a fan of others. Theyre a good compromise as theyre reasonable to wear to work and do fair on the ride home.

+1

been riding on these throughout the fall/winter. the seat on them shows a little bit of wear after a couple of months sitting on a saddle, but at less than $25 and shipped in 3 days from Amazon Prime, getting replacements is no hassle.

the Dickies skinny fit is definitely skinny, those that are more normal-shaped might opt for the original 874 cut.

I love my Swrve pants, but they're too fucking expensive. I'm going to check out the Dickie's work pants next time I roll to Fred Meyer.

I'm just surprised that we're nearly a page into this thread and no one's suggested jeggings yet.

If you're bling as fuck you can get outliers. The dungarees will last forever but damn they$$$$. When I was working weekends at a bike shop in brooklyn Outlier threw a returns/bin sale once a year. The times I worked it they tossed each of the bike shop monkeys a free pair. Goddamn good pants but for my money its hard to beat dickies.

No more love for the Prana Zion?

You could Guinea pig the Magpul Bonnel.

No matter what, you'll give them a hard life and they will die. Clothes are consumables too. Buy something you'll enjoy but know they won't be your last pair of pants.

I brought these to work today if you want to try them on during the ride.

Also brought the other pair for Wang.

If you like, perhaps trade for 6-pack or some cannabis?

After reading all this, I bought a new pair of $20 Dickies on Amazon. The Original cut for the comforts, and I'm going to be hemming them at the calf ala my RIP favorite pair of Swrves. Sailed all weekend in them, forgot how great of cheap tough pants they are.

somewhat tempting, if they came in wool. In similar news, I can't seem to find any decent surplus military knickers that come in size 34. Seems like the only knickers left out there that are good are 32 and under.
