EDIT: POINT 83 NOT .83 THE "." MESSES EVERYTHING UP

I've been on Bike Index a bunch lately because it seems that the bicycle reownership industry in the U has really taken off in recent months, and it's driving me nuts. Of club concern, there seems to be a lot more "us" bikes lately... touring rigs, cx bikes, rigid mtbs, you know the deal. Today I noticed that Bike Index now has an "organization" feature. I've created a "Point 83" organization, which is essentially a central place to list our bikes.

I honestly have no idea if this is worth the trouble or not. Would like some input--comments or votes. Off the top of my head, potential benefits are:

  • "Wow, a straggler leaning against a stop sign. *bleep bloop bleep* oh shit that's Jane Doe's bike, I'll lock that up" (for me this could be the difference between actually locking up a found bike vs just looking it up later on bike index, because I was running late or some shit)
  • Some sort of group motivation to actually put our shit up?
  • Place to floss your siq wip on the net
  • Can initiate mass registrations with pen and paper at big events like Bulls, Waffles, etc. (pssst Girls of Summer)
  • John Deere hasn't ridden with us in 3 years, but I'm pretty sure that's his bike that someone found. He's not checking his messages, but we might be able to still track him down.

But maybe Bike Index on the individual level already works fine and I am actually the bicycle Stasi trying to create a central purge list for the coming ReGreatening.

Anways, as I understand it, the way it works is that someone in the group enters in the basic bike info (year make model sn color), plus owner's email. Bike is then listed in our group, and the owner gets an email so that they can add additional data (photos, etc.). This could be done via pen and paper at rides, or through an online form, which might look like this:

Anyways, feel free to add your shit, or don't. If a bunch of people submit their info, I'll batch add it all to Bike Index in a few days. But either way, I'd like to hear some feedback.

is there a way to link our previously bikeindex-listed machines to the group, or do we enter them anew?

edit: yep, you can link. "edit bike" > "Groups + Ownership" > "Add an Organization" > "Point 83"

POINT 83 NOT .83

edit again: this is still buggy. adding the bike by this method will show that the bike is a member of the group when you view the bike, but does not show the bike in the group list. I imagine they'll iron out these kinks eventually.

also can't delete .83. sent an email.
