So, my Nokons are now officially 9 years old - I have NEVER had to replace my cables since I built the Paramount. Until now. the ends are seriously frayed and I'd like to shorten 'em up a bit and whatnot since they're super long.

Now, I've been debating - back in '09, Nokons were really the only modular cable system arund, but now there's Aican, PowerCordz, Alligator, and a few others.

Anyone use one of hte other brands, and if so, how do you like them?

Isn't it only the housing that is unusual? It's probably still in great shape, why not just replace the inner cables?

Well, I figure the housings will be hand-me-downs for another bike I'm building, since they're a bit dirty and worn after 9 years on the same bike. But yeah, new cables and liners for 'em is still VASTLY cheaper than buying a new full set.

IIRC, Jagwire makes TI cables that can fit in 'em too, for hte folks who are really concerned about those extra couple grams.

dyneema or kevlar should be the real way to save weight.

Joe, the answer is "don't"

they were a fad, and are dead and gone for good reason

If you want to save weight and/or have tight bends in your housing, use Odyssey's "RACE LINEAR SLIC KABLE" — it's kevlar-jacketed aluminum compressionless housing, that I use for both brake and shift on some bikes. Besides black it comes in red white and blue. The gyro lug end on the matching colored cables fits well in road levers.

If you want your shifting to be extra super buttery get the Dura-Ace "Polymer" coated cables that Shimano invented for 11-speed. Yes they cost more than double anything else even wholesale but will make even your shitty routing job shift like a million bucks.
