I'm sure I don't need to tell you salt water is SOOOO much worse.

That's the other half of the story that rubs me the wrong way. Raising $10,000 for orca whales with a $5,000 bicycle plus gasoline for an RV starts to sound kind of fishy.
I love the idea of touring with kids, I'll probably do it myself someday. But I sure as hell wouldn't expect it to get turned into a news story. Just ride your damn bikes people!
Purposefully dipping the rear wheel of a nice divorce into saltwater before taking off on a cross-country trip seems like a really bad idea.
This is a common tradition going back to at least the Bikecentennial bike ride (which is where the TransAm route and Adventure Cycling Association was born). I don't think the tire and rim care that much about a little salt water, it isn't like they are dipping the hub and cassette.

Shilshole launch ramp is like 80% gas/oil anyway. Probably lubed the wheel right up.
Also good for this girl and her Dad. Seems like a cool cause.

Seems super sketchy to me. Salt water is gonna leak in through the rim holes and stay there. I've had spoke nipples fail from corrosion after getting dipped. That's not gonna be too fun on a tandem in Nebraska.
