I just got a fancy new sewing machine and I'm itching to use it. Anybody here interested in a randonneur or porteur bag? I can't promise I would make it super quickly... I try to save my sewing for rainy days. Also I might ask you to cover the cost of materials... maybe $30 or so.

Also, what do you think is the most common front rack size? I made a custom bag for my 7-bar CETMA rack but I don't think those are the norm.

I've been debating going with some sort of front rack/decaleur thing for a while, but never pulled the trigger because of costs. But if you're willing to make a bag, I'm interested. any color choices?

I've used regular old Duck Canvas in the past. There a lot of colors:

When I was done with my porteur bag I waxed it:

So I've made 2 bags using canvas but it might be fun experimenting with other materials.

I don't think we've ever actually met so I wouldn't go so far as to ask for a bag, but I do also use a 7-bar cetma, so if you end up with any fuckups or older designs from making bags for your own rig, I'd definitely be interested in buying one from you. I'm not one to obsess over every little detail...use it up, wear it out, make it to do or do without etc etc.

Wooo diy. I got the bag bug last year. Happy to share patterns/sketches/materials if youre so inclined. Swing by seattle fabrics if you havent yet. Online rockywoods and quest outfitters are good. Especially for little notions that arent carried locally. Fabric wise Im partial to 500-1000D nylon "cordura" and a 2oz sil/pu coated ripstop nylon liner.

Try a cozy/feedback and framebag next. Much easier/faster than front bags IMO.

Front bag optimal size is about about 8hx8dx10w for me. Scale up to (IIRC) 11d x13w for colin sized rack. Traditional rando bags are wonky amounts of shallow & deep for me.

Yeah I've been thinking of trying cordura next.

I don't know what a cozy/feedback is. Googling didn't help.

I thought about making a frame bag but it seems like they can be found for pretty cheap. My approach to DIY sewing is that it should make some kind of financial sense. When I wanted to make a porteur bag I looked at Swift and thought, "Well shit, I can sew a freaking cloth box for a lot less than that." (And that's not to knock Swift at all -- their stuff is a lot nicer and better designed than mine and it's cool they make it locally). Between my randonneur bag and my porteur bag that's damn near $500 worth of gear.

Pick out a front rack first and then we can build your bag to fit it.

Typo there, meant "feedbag" like this https://www.randijofab.com/collections/bags/products/bartender-bag. Youre right theres not as large of a delta between retail material and finished frame bag cost. The big benefit to me is getting perfect fit to the frame.
