i'm a tad frantic because i leave tonight and so much to do.

okay, *breathe* i cannot get my derailers adjusted correctly. so i have to ride around in the granny gear.

i just called aaron. i think i am going to ride it as is and have him look at it saturday morning.

Good news is that's usually an easy problem to solve. Should take Aaron like 10 minutes to fix.

However, being in an advanced state of frantic is probably not the time to be mucking about with derailleur adjustments.

i ride i single speed because i am derailer-retarded.

i have the blue book here. i am just going to ask aaron to help me fix it. i need to go in there anyway to get some new black hoods and a new middle chain-ring for this bike.

Yah, if you've got the time, you should try to get it sort-of working.

Getting a derailers perfect is hard. Getting them so that most of the gears work most of the time should be easy.

no time. that is the problem. i have 2 week of homework to catch up on from being in japan to do before i leave tonight.

i may just bring my single speed and leave these problems for a later date when i have less things to attend to. it would be good to get it done before my new job starts though.

if you do bring your singlespeed, that 18t cog is yours. or if you bring your gears, we could get it working in about a minute. maybe five.

This assumes you:
A. Have down tube shifters with no extra barrel adjusters.
B. Don't really need to adjust the front derailleur too much.
C. The limit screws do not need adjusting.

If you have STI or some other type of shifters, need the front derailleur explained, or your limit screws are not right, I will happily speak to those. Just tell me what you have/need.

Well, here is the answer anyway:

1. Shift in to the gear with the fewest number of teeth front at back.
2. At the rear derailleur, where the cable housing enters, screw the barrel adjuster all the way in.
3. Use a [tool] to loose the cable binder on the rear derailleur with you right hand. Use your left hand to pull the cable tight, and tighten the cable binder.
4. Use a [tool] to loose the cable binder on the front derailleur with you right hand. Use your left hand to pull the cable tight, and tighten the cable binder.
5. Shift up once on the shifter, and watch the chain. It should snap up one gear.
- If it hesitates or clicks a lot, unscrew the barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur out 1/2 turn.
- If it jumps up a gear and tries to jump for a another gear, use a [tool] to loose the cable binder on the rear derailleur with you right hand. Use your left hand to hold some tension on the cable, and tighten the cable binder.
- If it shifts cleanly, test the rest of the gears in this way until you reach the reach the rear gear with the largest number of teeth, then goto step 8.
6. Shift in to the rear gear with the fewest number of teeth.
7. Repeat Step 5.
8. Shift in to the rear gear with the largest number of teeth.
9. Shift down once using the shifter, and watch the chain. It should snap down one gear.
- If it hesitates or clicks a lot, screw the barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur in 1/2 turn.
- If it jumps up a gear and tries to jump for a another gear, unscrew the barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur out 1/2 turn.
- If it shifts cleanly, test the rest of the gears in this way until you reach the reach the rear gear with the largest fewest of teeth, then goto step 12.
10. Shift in to the rear gear with the largest number of teeth.
11. Repeat Step 8.
12. Have a beer.

I've got a derailleur coming in the mail any day. I'm planning on picking up some various parts and pieces at the Bike Swap too... can you schedule something for after that weekend?
