I don't know if you all have biked to this wonderful place, but I did with Tom and Dada two summers ago. It's a really fun ride. Aside from encouraging people to ride down there (especially with Sunrise open only for bikes right now), but I'd also encourage people to fill out this survey to make sure there are more opportunities for bikes are down there.

When you fill it out, be sure to mention safe/continuous trail connections all the way from Seattle and how much you love to spend at bars and restaurants in the local economy. This gives economic development people tingles in their special spots. They're considering building more off-road trails down there. Fuck yea.

I'm actually right now trying to convince my GF that we should go to the Ipsut creek campground for her birthday.

I've been out there a bunch, the Mountaineers own the last lot before the NP starts at the end of the road and my wife bases her summer camp program out of that property.

It's a wonderful bike ride, especially if you can link up the trail systems to get there/back. There's a couple egregious missing links that put you on the streets with the locals but otherwise yeah. Do this trip. Bike all the way to Ipsut Creek and camp.

I don't think I can convince the ladyfriend to do 80+ miles from Everett, but I could probably convince her to do 5 miles.

there's only one road, googlemap it. The only hack I can recommend is to look for a boot path that goes along the creek that is rough but better than the narrow shoulder to South Prairie where you can get the Foothills trail back to civilzation

via the Cedar River Trail, Black Diamond, Enumclaw, Buckley:

food stop: Buckley Public Market
(also recommend getting a coffee and pastries at the Black Diamond Bakery)

via the Interurban and Foothills Trails: (recommended, an A+ route)

food stop: Safeway in Orting

What Rob said, except when I did it last, I took AP Tubbs Road from South Prairie to Carbanado. It's since acquired some homes near Johns Rd and is one of those old timber company roads so it might be verboten now.

AP Tubbs road is fine; was out there recently - Angela has an uncle that bought a big home in one of those gated communities up there.

carbon river is certainly on my list too!

i was thinking about doing it a month ago but ended up climbing to mowich lake instead since i heard the road was gated and that it would be deserted. that road climbs forever but gets you up close and personal with the mountain. i hit some snow and ended up hiking the last two miles to the lake. camped right next to the lake and didn't see another soul all night. it was beautiful though and i think worth the extra climbing(?)

strava activity from june 25th (i think you need to be logged in to view this)

anyways, looks like the gate is still closed but the snow is pretty much melted so now might be the prefect opportunity to visit the lake!

also i took tubbs rd and it was nice. just one steep part iirc

I'm trying to sort out now what it'll take to find a decent spot to pitch a tent. Sounds like I might need to wait till the end of the month

Can I subscribe to thread? I've had it in the back of my brain to do this too. Nonzero chance that I might be up for it this weekend or next; sounds like a pretty ideal time for it. Shoot me a message/email if you'd want a buddy to ride out there.

Thanks Rob + Kevin for posting routes!

Several years ago I posted here looking for comrades for this trip; got exactly one taker, Ryan H... forget what his user name here is.

Anyway we rode the Interurban to Sumner or wherever it ends... roads after that were pretty much OK, one or two nasty narrow spots.

We camped just outside the park boundary, in some woods by the road, so that we could have a fire. There was a fair amount of trash there from yokuls who'd done the same, but we had the spot to ourselves.

After setting up camp and dumping most gear we rode up to Ipsut Creek and back just for the hell of it.

Great route and trip overall.

I'm planning on going down Friday the 31st, and riding back the next day. Anyone who wants to join is welcome, but you'll need to figure out your camping on your own. I have a permit for myself; I don't think we'd be able to get a group permit for the near future, but maybe worth a try. As mentioned camping just outside nat'l forest boundary is a possibility.

Permitting is a little funky with covid, there's no walk up, but here's the spreadsheet to check, updated yesterday: https://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/upload/Backcountry-Camp-and-Alpine-Zone-Availability-7-23-2020.xlsx

Drove up here today and back, camping along the river just after the Carbon River Ranger Station seems pretty easy, there were a number of spots open some more sketchy looking than others.

I rode all the way in, there are two washouts but nothing too challenging. I didn't see anyone actually camping at Ipsut Campground but they have bear lockers and such. The ranger station is closed but you can walk up and talk to the ranger on duty.

good intel thanks. based on their calendar, i think the season really begins friday, which might explain why everything was so empty.

There's a ton of campsites along the carbon river in the last mile or so before the park - though don't think it'll be all peace and quiet, the ATV & gun crowd (and the "don't bury your own shit" crowd) seems to love this area.

can confirm, the Mountaineers literally tore down a cabin and left their property as grassy car camping just before the parking lot because the shithead locals wouldn't stay out of the building. Turns out locals don't have a lot of respect for the land outside of extracting value and prepping for the apocalypse.
