hey, joe, my coworker who built his st fixie at one of aaron's shop nights is having a problem. his toe cages hit his front wheel. there is apx 1/2 inch overlap. it is worse now due to the front fender. i thought he might be running long cranks, but they are 170's. thoughts?

Well to loose that 1/2 an inch he'd need 160mm cranks. I run 170's with fenders and clipless pedals and I don't have a problem with toe overlap. I think running clipless may move his foot back and alleviate the problem.

no track stands, ate shit, just mounting and turning the wheel at a stop light. due to $ clipless is not the best option. the head tube just has a steep? angle to it. he might need to try 160's

he could also go with a smaller front wheel. henry can fill him in on the details.

On a bike with toe overlap, you just have to learn to deal with it. 160mm cranks are not available. Converting the bike to 650A or 650B wheels might solve the problem. It did on my Colnago and I use fenders .
The problem is the front center (bb to front axle dimension) is short. Most track bikes have toe-overlap and so do most road bikes. The only way to not get it is by a shallow head angle (changes handling) or a long top tube (changes fit). Terry bikes "solve" the problem with a small 24" front wheel.
Toe overlap is really only a problem if you make it one. Get used to it or get a different bike! If you bring the bike by my shop I can look at it and see if the small wheel trick will work.

Recognize...
It's really the best way. Much like pedaling thru corners on a fixed gear, you just have to learn how to do it.

technically, you can make 160mm cranks from 180mm cranks using a hacksaw and a drill, if you really need them. saw off the end and re-drill and tap new holes further down the crankarm.

I didn't mean to imply that 160mm cranks are common, but they are available. What kind of frame is it justin?
Oh, yeah, BMX Mini cranks. Those are designed for 8 year olds!
When I had my adjustable cranks on, I rode 155mm just to see what it was like. Not too bad, but you can feel the drop in leverage when going uphill.
For flats and down hill, they were fine.

I ride fairly small frames 50-51-52cm and of my three bikes two have toe overlap..I had a black miyata 310 road bike once and it also had really bad toe overlap...I hate it but as long as it isn't too bad...then it's fine.
