Alright, so I know this is far away, but the Bicycle Film Festival in San Fran is Oct 6-8, and I am really planning on going to this.
I was wondering if anyone else was interested. I'm going to take some time off work, maybe a 5 day weekend, and fly down to experience this.
Tickets are like $225 on orbitz. I'm sure we could find cheaper.
Anyone interested, hit me up, I'm not a total jackass and make an A-OK motel roommate. I'd love to split the cost on some shitty room just to take this event in.

I'd be interested, let me get back from Bawlmer, and I'll know my schedule around then better. Going to San Fran is reason enough to go. . . but the film seems rad too.

i'd love to go. nick and i will likely be down looking for jobs and apartments then. depending where the film festival is located, we might be able to stay with friends. especially if it is in the eastbay... there are plenty of warehouses with cool kids that would house us.
we could look into taking the train with bikes? may be cheaper than 250 for plane (150 + 50 each way for bikes). plus i have never taken the train, it could be fun/long.
i'll talk to people when i am down at the end of august (brooke, nick, and i will be riding in sf's critical mass in august) and see what people down there say about the film festival. it sounds cool either way.

Yes let's take the train!
From Seattle to oakland is $78 one-way (same coming back) on the Coast Starlight (11). It's a little under 24 hours.
This could be a rad good time.

yay!
i'll bring my calendar thursday and maybe we talk about days that work for us. i'll also take down the train schedule so we know our options. that way we can buy tickets while they are available and cheap and ride the train as a group.
(yes, i like to plan these things EARLY)

Depending on who the group going on the train is, I might be interested.
Otherwise I'll either take a plane or make a roadtrip out of it.
Matt, let's talk about some options.

I'm so down!
Making good money at a super laid back job means I can totally take the time off! Er, maybe..
Anyway, yeah. Keep me informed?

found tickets on travel.yahoo.com starting at 167$. 160-175$ is typical of what i have paid in the past. most airlines charge 50$ each way to ship your bike on the plane. so total would be about 275$.
amtrack would be 175$ plus 5-10$ each way and some trains have bike racks (just looked online) so we wouldn't need to box them up. so about 200$ plus 2 days of your life in a seat.
it'd be cool if amtrak ran a special so we could go down for wicked cheap. they often have a buy one get one free, or a buy two get the next for 75% off type deals. i'll try to keep an eye on the deals there.

If you join NARP you're eligible for a 10% discount with amtrak. And before Derrick says anything NARP and NAMBLA are not even remotely the same thing.
i'm interested in doing it the absolute cheapest way possible.
i'd bike with you. hehe. seriously though, i'd totally bike if we could go along the coast and try to avoid the worst of the mountains.

So, I'm thinking about riding my bike to Antartica in November. Anyone down to go? Maybe share a room? I hear the fish and chips there are killer. Maybe we could take a freighter. What does everyone think?

I honestly think that there isn't any route to California that avoids steep climbs. Any route you take is going to have long descents and longer hills to conquer.

I'm all down for biking down there, I just love climbing and descending. Although the water around Antarctica is chilly this time of year isn't it?

I'm considering picking up a dry suit. Do you think it will hinder my pedaling?

The Ocean is all at the same elevation. If you stay on 101 along the coast, you skip most of the mountains. It's a really long windy route with lots of car traffic and narrow/noexistant shoulders.

So a dry suit wouldn't be necessary on this leg of the route I presume?

probably be a good time to go being as november is the antarctic summer. i hear they have drinking there.

As long as you picked up some of those really wide Surly tires you'd essentially be able to float on the water and just cruise. The other option would be multiple oxygen tanks floating on a teathered raft and a rather large weight belt. Then you could just cruise along the bottom. Other than several oceanic ridgelines I hear the seafloor is relatively flat south of Chile.

sort of off-topic, but there's a race I missed because I left Bawlmer, but it involves building a bike that needs to cross the harbour.
Dude, fuck Antarctica. I saw this documentary this one time about a group of scientists that got trapped there with this shape shifting alien that killed them and assumed thier identities.
It had some serious identity and attatchment issues...
