Let me start by apologizing if this is a duplicate. I've spent about an hour going through the 'Chris King' and 'Phil Wood' search results and sort of have a decent idea, but I'd like to just ask it.
I've been thinking of getting a new wheelset and I'm wondering about Chris King hubs vs. the Phil Wood hubs. They seem to be roughly the same price, so what makes one better than the other?
For rims, I was looking at the Velocity deep Vs, but I'm open to suggestions.
I have a feeling the first question someone is going to ask will be "What do you intend to use these for?"
My answer to that will be 90% commuting (burke/street) and then say 10% riding either off-road cross racing and/or whatever kind of riding/racing you guys do. On average the wheelset would get about 3000 miles / year.
One thing I did read on the 'Phil Wood' search results, was a thread about them getting stolen outside the CIP. Naturally this can happen to anyone, but is having PW hubs vs. CK hubs make a bike look more appealing to rip off than the other?
Perhaps the question is, for the given usage, what is the perfect wheelset?

just on the topic of stealing, both of those hubs with deep v's would make a nice shiny target for theft. get a good lock (and put it on both wheels)

i hear phils and kings are nice. i'm rockin a suzue pro (disco) half the $, works just fine and i'm loggin a lot more than 3k. if i was to build up a track only ride, maybe i'd go with phil or king, but most likely i'd got with the suzue again, if i really wanted to drop cash i'd go with the carbon model. deep v's are nice and popular and seems to work well in the street. haven't seen any blow up coming off a curb, yet. plus they come in half a billion colors...

i don't know what your budget constraints are but you can get more than descent hubs for substantially cheaper than either the options you posed.
Check out the surleys?
And i'd like to reiterate derrick's comment on the lock.

my 32h surly hubs laced to deep v rims have done well for me, and i am a man who is hard on things. i do break spokes every now and then and i've put some serious dents in my rim but it bends instead of breaking. a little plier action later and they're basically as good as new. the only downside as far as i can tell is weight, but other than that i would recommend them without hesitation.

though it is hard for me to agree with anything given my sunny disposition, i concur wholeheartedly.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll take a look at the surly ones for sure.
One thing that I didn't mention, is this is for a geared bike, so that sort of makes the Suzues out of the question (unless they make geared hubs?)

jesus, just go to a shop and ask to look at a catelog, and ask questions.
i'm sure you can find something that is a better value than two of the most over priced hubs on the market.

King and Phil are not over priced. They are just priced from paying American wages. If you want to support a different country (where wages are low and environmental concerns are not an issue) buy anything else. Other American brands are White Industries and American Classic, but neither are as durable as King or Phil. On a durability scale I would rate them highest to lowest: Phil (last forever, really), King (light but maintenance with expensive tools), White (shiney *Denny* but pernsnikity), American Classic (non standard bearings, hard to replace, goof ball designer).
I am talking about cassette/freehubs here.
Also, for the money it is impossible to get a better hub than a Shimano XT. If you maintenance them they will last for years. Every shop in the first world will have parts and they are reasonably priced.
Campagnolo Freehubs are nice but expensive to replace parts and need a lot of mantenance to last, but all parts are replaceable, however, they are expensive.
All that said, you will be OK if you just MAINTAIN you equiptment.
I see equiptment all the time and people are shocked when I show them thier rusted out parts. They think because it is expensive they don't have to lube or maintain it as much. The opposite is true.

What to do, what to do. I notice you didn't mention the Surly hubs. Any reason for that ?
Aaron, for fun what would a Surly wheelset cost vs the XT wheelset (both on the Velocity deep Vs), or is that something I should email you about directly?
Since we're on the topic, what does it take to get the .83 card again ?

Surly doesn't make multi speed hubs.

Well, have you filled out your Terms Of Service agreement? Did you bring a bottle of flavored Brandy to a ride? Did you get the shit kicked out of you by Deniese? Can you skid no handed?
If not you will never make it in.
Seriously, 3 rides and a race. Period. Races can be rides, but not vice-versa

My OCR (rear obviously) had the spokes start ripping out straight through the rim. Ritchey rims and hubs have had some issues in the recent past. I thik they may have them mostly worked out at this point, and they are good about recalls, but I don't really trust the OCR after my last one. I still have it in my garage if anyone is overly curious.

i may be a "dorkus malorkus" but i think surly just doesn't make "new" free hubs; that they're still stocked somewhere if you're lucky. i hear they're a simple, sure shot.
Hey, the Amish got a good thing going. I would live with them if they didn't have so much God and they rode bikes.

I have a true friend that is Amish. Well he now is Mennonite. He used to be a Dead Baby. Then he moved back east to join the Amish. Super nice guy. Was totally in to bikes and choppers. Had to give them up. True story! He told me the Amish don't use bikes because they don't want their young to stray far. He made many human powered tools for them. They have a full wood working shop with lathes, band saws, etc, all powered by horeses. They grow all their own food. They are living the post-oil dream! We will all need to learn from them.
