Ok so please feel free to lambast me if i'm doing something stupid or horribly wrong. Here's my problem:
I can't get the fucking cassette off my mountain bike.
I've got the little spline tool and i've used it successfully several times, but i can't get the fucking thing off this wheel.
Shouldn't it freewheel in one direction? I thought i remembered having to use a chain whip. But it doesn't freewheel in either direction when i put the spline thing in there, is that bad?
Either way, just put the tool in place and hold it there with the QR. Then hold the cassette with a chain whip from turning in the freewheel direction (counter clock wise) and use a big wrench to unscrew the lockring.

Ungood. Does it freewheel with the tool removed?

yeah the cassette freewheels fine when the tool is not in there.
so i guess my question is, should I be able to turn the the tool freely in one direction when it's engaged in the cassette?
use the chainwhip to keep it from freewheeling, and remove the splined thingy (technical term) in that direction, lefty loosy.

Henry, step away from the tools.
What sort of cassette do you have? Does it have a lockring?

that's the thing, it doesn't freewheel. I've only done this a couple times and it was a while back but i remember using the chainwhip to keep it from freewheeling, and now it worries me that there seems to be no need since it won't freewheel.
I can't remember off the top of my head whether the cassette should freewheel with the lock ring remover in place or not.
With the cassette facing away from you, the chain whip should be on the left. Rotate the lockring remover to the right. If that doesn't work, then professional help is indicated.
Gin is way nastier than vodka.

Drinking beer is a great way to stop and think about what you are doing. I've solved plenty of problems that way.

It should turn. counter clockwise with the tool in place or not.
