After lurking a spell, I thought I would ask for input on the fallowing project.

I'm building a set of cranks for a bike I'm building from the frame up. I'm starting with a top end standard square tapered BB (Shimano) and adding a set of 110 B. C. D. crankarms (Sugino or old school Deore)

I plan to use 2 chainrings-- one 50T or 48T and the second as small as I can realisticy go....36T? down to 34T? I'd like to hear from folks have really rode a compact crankset.... not just reading about them on pompous internet wanna-be wrench chat rooms.

Should I get rings with pins and ramps? or just the old school ones? Do the francy ones by outfits like FSA really work any better?

What front derailer would you use? I'm planning on using friction shifting and the traditional road bike cable routing.

Thanks for the forum-- it's been great reading.

Good, because it's the only way it will work. With such a small difference is size between big and middle and such a huge difference between middle and small, you will be endlessly beset by difficulties. I would use a ramped and pined ring on the middle and plain round for everything else. Personally, I would just run it 48-36-24. I have been running this on my Stumpjumper for 15 years. There isn't much use for the big and middle rings to be only two teeth different on a multi geared bike and you won't find much bigger than 28 for your inner.

As to front der, Ultegra tripple would be fine or an old school (Like XT thumb shifter old) XT front der.

I ride 48x36, which works fine for me [1]. If you're running double, not triple then shifting is quite a bit less complicated. With friction shifting on a double, pins and ramps are really not necessary.

Of course if you want a triple, you could pick up this crankset. It's a cheap, good quality 46x36x26. If you want to use it as a triple, just take off the inner 74mm chainring. This also gives you the versatility of adding it back if you decide you need it.

[1] An 11-28 nine speed cassette in back gives me *lots* of range.

Thanks for the tips-- nothing I didn't already have an idea about, but it's always nice to get a second opinion before starting a project. I'm sure I'll be back to ask more more advice before the bike is finished.

zuvembl,

What did you do, buy the standard Sugino 46-36-26 XD, take off the 26 and 46 rings and put a 48 on? (Salsa sells cheap machined alu changrings without pins or ramps)

How long is your BB spindle? (118?)

What front derailer do you have? Is it a triple or double model? (i'm a little worried that the limit screws won't let some double derailers have enough range to cover the back to front distance using a triple crank, even with only 2 chainrings)

Any trouble with a 9 speed chain and the Sugino 8 speed chainrings?

I'd like a double with friction shifting because it's easy to set up and maintain, but having the option of going back to a triple for some epic mountian tour is very appealing-- especially if I could keep the same front derailer.
