I noticed the cluster on my road bike is not spinnning as nice as it used to. After a couple thousand miles I guess it's time for attention. What is your favorite lube and method of lubing your freehub or freewheel?

I have done it different ways over the years, from just ignoring them until they frag, to dribbling oil into it around the edges whilst spinning, to disecting the thing and filling it with lithium grease.

I have seen an ad recently for a device that is supposed to inject your favorite oil or grease into the mechanism. Has anyone tried one of these?

A little bit of Phil Tenacious Oil goes a long way in a freewheel / freehub! I usually just drip it in the crack while spinning it, but I'm sure the 'pros' here have better methods for people who aren't lazy like me when it comes to maintenance.

My freewheel has been really happy ever since I took it off 6 months ago :) Nice and warm in the storage room.

Phil Wood or 90 wt gear oil (Val's fav)
At my shop we have the Morningstar Freehub Buddy injector. But usually, after degreasing in solvent and flushing, we heat the body up with a blow dryer (in the oven at 150 degrees would work too) and then oil just flows right in! I "seal" the cracks with a bit of grease. Most good quality freehubs have a seal on the back side. Don't forget to remove and clean it! Use grease to lube it up before reinstalling the seal.

OK Aaron, yer man Andy fixed me up with a bottle of the good sticky, slimey stuff.

It's a 3 or 4 year old LX hub. Does the freewheel come off of the hub? Is that one of those that comes off with a big hex key?

Forrest

Is that you Forrest?

Surly Forrest?

Yes, 10mm allen wrench. There should be a rubber seal on the back side.

Hey, everyone, this is my friend Forrest! Be nice!
