If it were clean, would it be super-easy or doubleplushard to slap a freewheel on my hub? Here is a picture of it. Would it be foolish to have a freewheel and only a front brake? I tend to think not, the rear is pretty useless anyway. Anyone have such a device, with 16 teeth?

I'm starting to miss my bike equiped with veloce gear ratio changing devices. It only needed a new frame, wheels, and drivetrain.

Super-easy. Clean it, grease it, thread the bugger on. It will tighten as you pedal. No tools required, other than for your axle nuts.

Most people with freewheels use two brakes. Redundancy is good.

Back brakes aren't about stopping the bike faster, they're about being able to stop the bike at all when your front brakes fail.

For many questions, thre's an "If you want to be cool" answer and an "If you want to live a long time" answer.

when i first started singlespeed bikes i rode a front brake only on a freewheel. i had some pretty scary close calls.

this is the point where dean would say "it's totally fine dude", but i would say "i'm not gonna do that again, i probably should have died."

NO!

Brake cables break!!!!! Not often, but sometimes!

Then again, all the neighborhood BMX kids I see run brakeless. (freewheel and no hand brakes that is)

I rode my single speed with only a (shitty)front brake for nearly 8 months.

in that time my brake failed me more than 3 times...

instead of buying a new one, i just went fixed.

I was fine, i got real good at wedging my foot back there to stop. it was scary, but not deathly.

What is the benefit of having one brake seth?

If this is for the fuji, it's already drilled for the second brake anyway.

Yeah, as soon as all my bmx friends started going brakeless, I decided I was too old for that crap.

Fucking nuts.

I raced BMX-dirt brakeless, and have at various points ridden all of my bikes without a back gear. It is unadvisable to foot-brake for long, it is quite hard on the wheel. Hard on the rider's longevity as well.

(there are things I love about my job. Drinking wino with the editorial staff on Fridays is #1)
