How does a half-link work? It seems impossible. I mean, when the section of chain with the half-link is engaged on the chain ring, a fixed integer number if links are grabbing teeth, right?

What am I missing?

It allows you to adjust your wheel in 1/4" increments instead of 1/2" increments if you're running a singlespeed/fixed gear with horizontal drops (usually bmx kids care about this the most).

Any place fine chain length adjustment is necessary, such as non-horizontal dropout fixed-gear conversions.
