I know everyone has opinions so... let's here them.
I hopefully will be visited by the UPS guy with my 8 inch grips and Major Taylor bars today. I want them to go on smooth and stay on. What's the best method to do that?

I prefer an air compressor and an air nozzle. Shoot it under the grip and it slides right on.

A small quantity of WD40 works OK. It evaporates completely. Don't use something like tri-flow or White lightning that leaves behind a solid lubricant.
