anybody have one lying around for cheap? thanks to gatorade's handy 'vertical dropout drivetrain chart' i was able to take the chain tensioner off the police bike and make an awesome new drivetrain. problem is, right now it's 42x15 which is almost 73 gear inches. i'd rather be 44x17, a much more reasonable ratio (67gi) and the same as the andre and ben's 'urban mtb' surly bikes.
also, i'm thinking we need to have some further urban mtb adventures. the frontage road on thursday would have been pretty cool to explore further with the proper bikes. i'm sure there are other cool places like that to roll around in, weird little forgotten parts of the city that nobody goes to.

I don't have a chainring for ya Lee, but I'd be down for urban mtb adventures. Maybe a special Tuesday ride plan? We should also take the mtbs out on camping trips this summer. Bikes like to camp in the woods.

Yeah, we've done tuesday night 'bring out the big rigs' rides before. I'm always up for that.

on the topic of cogs and skid patch I have come up with the perfect combo for me 47/17 with a flip flop to a higher gear inch, maybe 14 or 16, for the race. I have the cogs but need a 47T Chainring 1/8". Right now I am running 42/14 and that gave 81 GI and 1 skid patch. not optimum for living on CH.
Any body have a 47T extra before I buy one new?

I stock all the chainring sizes from 44 thru 52T. They are 130mm Bolt Circle Diameter.

No sorry I don't have one. I was just going to say that I don't know if you will have much luck finding a 47t ring in 110bcd, Track racing is about the only application where a 47t is used and as such most 47t rings will be designed to work with track cranks which are 144bcd. "Rocket Rings" is one of the labels put on a very generic universal chainring that has drillings for both 110bcd and 130bcd cranks. They come in 1 tooth increments from 36 to 46 teeth, no 47 though. These run ~15-20$ in LBSs. Salsa rings are nice (like you indicated in your want add) but if you go to their website you can see all of the teeth x bcd combinations they make, 47x110 not being one.
Aaron said he stocked all rings 44-52 teeth but in 130 bcd. So it seems that you'll need to get a different crankset in either 130bcd or 144bcd if you are really intent on a 47t ring. You might just want to go with a 48x17 combo.

wow, learning curve is like riding up 23rd after spending too long at the CIP.
OK, so here is my overall desire, keeping in mind that I want to do it on as little money as possible, of course.
I have a 14T and a 17T cog and a 16T freewheel. Up front I am running the 42T 110bcd salsa ring that came on the bike. The 42/14 = 81 GI and 1 skid patch (BAD), but gives me the ability to flip my wheel to the 42/16fw = 70.9 GI and infinite skid (or 0 skid w/o rear brake). The 17T seems to be the magic number on the cog, almost all skids are 17. The 47T is the magic number for the chainring with no 1s on the patch. The two together seem to give a good compromise GI at 74.6.
I would like to put the 17 back on and still keep up with the pack, 43T is also a magic number but would only yield a 68.3 GI. Somewhere in the mid 70s is the goal with a 17 skid patch.
New crancks are probably the real answer, but that will have to wait until I am back on the gov't dole. I will probably go with a 46T until then. Thanks for the help, and everyone please feel free to correct me anywhere up there where I am wrong, on in my general understanding of this concept.

sweet ass! i dont actually know how big my spider is. i figured i'd hold chainrings up to it and see if it will fit, rather than trying to figure out its size.
if they fit, i'll take em!

you might try measuring your bcd, just to check. 110 is mountain standard, 130 is road standard, and there's alot in between of random sizes.
