Some other people have been talking about hosting a race. Anyone have a date in mind, I’ll like to reserve Saturday evening 8.27.05 for my uphill sprint. Anyone interested in helping to make this a series?
Consider it done. I'm working on a race myself, but don't worry I'll make sure the uphill race is reserved for you.
I actually wont be in town on the 27th (nor will Leslie, FYI) but don't let that deter you from running a race then. Pleanty of other people will be and I'm sure they'll be all over it. Let me know if you need any help planning it at all. I've found a few things that work real well and a few things that don't and would be more than happy to give you a few tips. Just shoot me an email.
I call 8-13-05 for my race date!

dont worry, the hill comes at the second half, the 1st half is technical, so if you cant climb you can still do well.

so i'm all official now? ive been out for like 4 thursdays. how big is your stencil? you say you have a two color?
Yeah, you've earned yourself a spoke card by being in the last race, and having at least 3 thursday night rides. I'll bring a few of them on Thursday to pay off everyone who's earned one that i keep forgetting about.
The stencil is approximately 9" across (give or take an inch), and can be done in one or two color. Here's a sample of what it looks like with orange as the base color and black as the logo color on a sheet of white paper. You could also do just the logo part of the stencil (without the base color) in any color that you'd like.

let me think about this, i think a full size stencil would look good, but maybe a couple 9" would be cool.

You totally need a 26" stencle to put on your wheel cover. THAT would be boss.

i've got an idea in my head for graphics, i'll show you my prototype and get some feedback from you. how many people show for a typical race 20?

Hard to say.. only 8 or 9 came for the drag race, but that was before a lot of you were coming out.. and that last race had a BUNCH! So who knows?

I'll definitely check out your stuff. We can print and lam the spokecards too. If you need directional signs we can get those too.
We'll figure it all out.

Yeah, and we had close to 25 for one of the sprint night races (other down to 10-15). Those drew more people in because they were all on protected race courses (ie places where cars and pedestrians wouldn't be an issue: think the i-90 bike tunnel).
Also, I was thinking that just one small stencil off to one side on each side of your disc would be pimp. Then people would be able to see how fast your wheel was spinning with the logo whipping round-and-round the axle. Just my opinion though.

hey Jake,
Could I get a stencil on a piece of plywood for my shop?
Maybe you could bring the stencil over to my shop? I have plenty of spray paint and wood. It would be cool to hang it from my shop ceiling mobile style, painted on both sides.
Maybe Jason could make me up some flyers about the club with the basic info and website URL and I could hand them out at my shop?

Maybe someone else can contribute on this one here, but in the past we chose not to have bike shops advertising for us because we wouldn't know what kind of people would be picking up the flyers. It's worked really well for news of .83 to travel via word of mouth because then it's like-minded individuals talking about us, or it's us talking to people who look like they might fit in. We'll do a little mass announcing at Critical Mass (and through their mailing list) but even then we know that people there are already part of the whole critical mass thing and are a little bit closer to what .83 is all about.
I think a better way to get people involved in the growing cycling community would be to get them involved in Critical Mass and handing out CM flyers. Mostly because CM is for everyone and is a lot more welcoming of an environment for Joe Bikeshopcustomer.
But then again those are my thoughts, and I am a bit of an ass...

I have to say I agree with Jake. I've been riding with .83 since March 17th and I found out through CM. I think it's a great way to get people involved that think about biking the way that we do.
I also love that we're growing without having to advertise so much. If one person tells two people and they tell two people....

I agree as far as handing out flyers at bike shops, but I think it would be cool if he had a .83 sign hanging in his shop.. he doesn't have to tell every one of his customers about the rides to represent.. besides, if .83 had an offical bike shop, I think Aaron's would be it, wouldn't it? I mean, he's all about hooking us up! Discounts here, special attention and deals there..
So yeah. My opinion is that, while handing out flyers at his shop might be a bad idea, he should totally have a sign up. Tha'd be awesome.

Great point Dean.
Aaron, whattaya got in mind for a sign? I found out last night that my existing stencil is only about a 8 inches across. I'm betting that we could get something larger done up for you and printed real nice if you wanted. Let me know what you're thinking about and I'll design something sweet.

The sign would be cool.
Jason gave me a bunch of Boozing and Biking flyers and I handed them out to people I thought would be hip. Certianly not Joe Bikeshopcustomer. We have many types of customers. Family BMX Dads and sons, Minivan Baby Jogger Moms, Hipsters, emo boys, fixed gear roadies, single speed MTBers, regular MTBers, racers, Rivendell 50 something guys and gals, and our most prevelant customer, THE COMMUTER! Yesterday a guy about my age brought in his 1970s fixie. I got excited when I told him there is a club of mostly fixed gear riders. He said he got the bike from a friend and has been riding it everyday for 6 weeks and can't get enought of it. I told him about Point 83. I certianly don't tell everyone.
A one or 2 foot square sign with a bright Point 83 logo would be cool. If it was mounted on a board then I could hang it from my ceiling mobile style. I would probably use and old chain to hang it.[/quote]
Aaron, it's not that I don't trust your judgement, but I think that we're already getting a steady influx of people from Critical Mass and online. We're growing so fast we're definately not in need of advertising. I'd say that it'd be best to put attention into getting people out to critical mass. If they're keen on .83 then they'll definately find us through doing the Critical Mass rides.
I'll get on making a sign for your shop. It'll totally kick ass. Promise! Give me a few days...
