As it was:
Rolling into work on the Surly I just bought from my friend, on Stewart and 7th heading into downtown my cat-eye opti cube, obviously distraught at having been separated from its previous mount, decided to end its life and jumped off the bike. Its death was immediate upon impact.

That light was 4 years old. I do not know how that translates into bike-light years.

Any thoughts on a good replacement? I like the versatility of using AA batteries--easy to get rechargeables, and even easier to find disposables in a pinch.

I stock the entire line of Cateye lights, but this light is by far the best on the market for the class of handlebar mounted 4-AA battery lights: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/b&m.asp

Cateye lights always make a click when you install them. If they don't remove them and reinstall them. Sometimes a little lube (vasiline) on the mount will make it engage better. Also on some mounts it is possible for the mounting screw to project up into the sliding area of the clamp and prevent it from clicking into place. I have had customers tell me the same thing and one time my light ejected too. You should call 1-800-5CATEYE and let them know what happened. Sometimes they will just send you a new light. The have an awesome warranty department.

$100 less 20% if you show me your spoke card. You won't find this light many places yet but hopefully that will change. It is the only LED light to really light the road. Most LED lights look bright but don't really illuminate the road much.
