How does one rationally evaluate hubs? All I find online is a bunch of people saying: "I bought hub model x, boy is it light and smooth rolling."

Anyone have any experience with Ultegra hubs?

Cartridge bearing hubs are a better value in the long run. Shimano hubs are a GREAT value, but if the left cup ever wears or gets rusty you will need a new hub. Of course Phil and Chris King are the best. Stay away from no-name hubs like what come on most bikes. Repair parts are not available. Shimano 105 is mechanically the same as Ultegra. Both are excellent values and sealed equally well. Ultegra is a smidge lighter. You sould pony up for Phil Wood though. It will outlast your bike! Phil are quieter than Chris King. Stay away from Mavic. That shit is not durable and only made for racing. I have a pile of those in my shop that have rusted from commuting. Phil take the least maintenance and can handle some neglect and still shine. Chris King will bitch at you if you neglect it and they scream for oil constantly.
