So, I was reading a thread on CBC's forum about lubricating chains. There are some people with some serious experience over there, maybe someone had a new trick I could learn. Then I found this...

um, sean? her commentary sounds like the same reason why so many people (even in .83) use white lightening. really, why get dirty if you can avoid it?

a dirty bike is a loved bike. I'm talking a bit of grit and grime, not some bike that's never seen a rag.
I keep an old dishcloth in my bag and wipe 'er down whenever I lube the chain. It works out well that my bike is usually getting grimy by the time the chain squeeks. Sorta like checking the oil and tire pressure whenever you fill the tank of your auto.

This means you've used too much. Oil is only good in the chain, not on it. You wipe it off after lubing for a reason. To not pick up dirt.
Most people use way too much and don't wipe enough off. It should be nearly totaly dry on the outside. It also requires more attention if you do that, so I can see why people leave more on than they should.

Leah. Sigh.
The comment about Phil's being "new" was funny. It suggests she's a noob, or has been doing all her shopping in places like REI that don't sell Phil's.
I was appalled that she found it perfectly ok for winter use, but wouldn't put it on her "good" bike because it attracted too much dirt. Does that mean she has another bike that she doesn't give a rat's ass about? Or that she just doesn't know how to oil her chain properly or that it has to be cleaned from time to time.
