Presta, I never really have trusted a French Valve.
So I go to top off my tire pressure before I leave the house and when I pull the nozzle off the valve stem comes with it. This is the second time I have had it happen. I think it is a pump nozzle issue because it is really hard to disengage from the valve. I even lubed it up with some water based personal lubricant (ID Glide, because I knew someone would ask). Any ideas, or is it just a shitty pump design (no way to take the nozzle apart).
Other issue is that my rims were drilled out for schraeder valves by the previous owner, I don't know if the edges are cutting the tube around the valve stem or what.
I am tempted to go back to my MTB ways and use the schraeders again, less problems.

Did the entire valve come out (with a section of tube)? If so, it's because your rim is drilled for schrader. You can try running the threaded collar inside the rim (i.e. put it on the valve before you install the tube).
If the valve itself broke, well that's happened to me once or twice. I was being stupid both times.

Denny, you are so smart, that is a great idea! Damn it I wish I would have thought of it. That will at least put a stop to pulling the whole damn stem out and popping a fully pressurized perfectly good tube.

i've broken presta valves off w/ a handpump before... many times when i was in a hurry.
however, i've never had that problem.
usually when I go to take my pump off my valve and it's sticking, i hold the valve w/ my fingers while pulling so there is no pull off the actually tube...

more than once, i've had cheap tubes come apart right at the base of the (presta) stem - Continental tubes have been the culprit every time it's happened. in fact, continental tubes forced me to take a goddamn bus from ballard to the eastside one night because of that very issue happening both on the tube ON my bike AND the spare i was carrying. every contintental tube i had lying around at home still in the boxes went into the trash that night.
Pyramid tubes are my current favorite. never had that problem with them at all.

having rims drilled for schreader valves isn't so bad because it allows you use one in a pinch if you need to. However you need to protect your presta valve.
you could thread the nut on before as denny suggested or get a pair of these presta savers for your rims.

I had a similar problem with my front rim recently. The previous owner had enlarged the hole a bit. It came with a little step-up nut that screws onto the valve stem. While changing tires I lost the nut but went ahead with things. Well, like you I ended up yanking the entire valve off the tube. I went down to Recycled and they gave me one of those step up nuts for free. Problem solved.

almost all new presta tubes come with that nut for the valve, some of the long valce stems are smooth and not threaded

no, this wasn't the regular nut that comes with the tube. I have plenty of those. This one had a raised ridge on the bottom that fit into the enlarged hole and made for a snug fit. That's why I said "step-up nut". My fault. "Step-up" is probably not the right term for it.
