I am sure that it has been a topic here but I am throwing it out as well. Campy vs Shimano - particularly I am interested in functionality - having not been a Campagnolo user before .. I wonder what the diference is b/t Campy ergo's mirage and veloce - again functionally and strength/durability.

I've never gone below Chorus w/ campy, but campy stuff is generally really well built - very simple, very durable, easily tweaked or repaired. It lasts forever. It's not what it used to be, but it's still awfully good.
Campy vs shimano is really personal. Campy shifting presumes you ride well. If you are an evil rear brake abuser, you'll find it hard to shift and brake at the same time. If you ride properly, it's not an issue. (You'll mostly be braking left and shifting right. The only time you'd brake right would be on long descents and then you won't be shifting.)
Campy feels good if you are a power rider. It doesn't offer much for the must-spin-at-110-rpm-cause-lance-does set.
Why I love campy: "On your left"- one click and say 19 to 12t, out of the saddle and ciiiiaaaaaooooo!". If you enjoy riding aggressively, it just feels better with campy.
(I'm a former campy rider who switched to shimano to give it a try. I'm going back at the end of the season. There's nothing wrong with shimano, but some of the thrill is definitely gone. What I really miss is downtube shifters, and campy at least recaptures something of the same feel.)

can anyone give a comparison list of shimano to campy? top to bottom, cheap to expensive....
ie. tier 1 campy = tier 1 shimano.

On my road bike, I used mirage and veloce each for a few years, several thousand miles and a racing season. They were both very reliable and served my needs perfectly. I would guess that Shimano 105 falls between the two. Unlike shimano, where the bottom few groups are complete garbage, I found mirage to very well made, just not as exotic as the pricey stuff. I did eventually go up to veloce because of a plastic ring in the shifter that broke a couple times (a problem in the pre-2001 9-speed components). What was really great, the first time this happened it was only a $3 part and a shifter overhaul to fix it. You just can't do that with shimano.
I found the shifting mechanics to be crisp and intuitive, and my next road bike will definately have campy components.
The brakes are strong, and tuning was fairly effortless.

Campy.
Mirage or better. All are rebuildable now.
Shimano STI is not rebuildable at all but some people like the feel better.

who the fuck cares?
this is the oldest, stupidest, most played out bullshit of a bike question.
ride each, decide for yourself.

I never would have admitted to that in public.
