My chain was getting kind of loose (fixed gear) and it was starting to bug me having this tiny bit of dead space while pedaling, so I tightened it, making it as tight as I could.
Question: can the chain be too tight?
Sheldon Brown's site has this cryptic bit about loosening the spider bolts one by one and smacking the chain. It sounds almost as involved as truing a wheel. That can't be necessary. I'm just commuting on it, not racing Keirin.
Can anything go wrong if I just take the much simpler approach of tightening as much as I can? (I'm not actually strong enough to stretch steel.) It feels great now, but I don't want to tear the chan apart.

To tight does exist. Shedlon has a method which works really well to correct it. As long as it is clean, you shoud be fine.

if you've got it super-tight you can overtighten it if your chainring or cog are slightly elliptical. it's worth at least checking to see if it gets tighter at any point or binds.
but yeah, too tight is better than too loose.
