anytime the cones on my wheels need tightening, i just use the justin method of hand-tightening them. is this in any way detrimental as opposed to using honest-to-jesus cone wrenches (which i do not own)?

if i should actually get cone wrenches, how do i know what size i need?

Cones and their locknuts should be the tightest thing on the bike. I'd get some cone wrenches.

As to size, ride you bike to the shop and see. It's usually 2 each of:
13mm
15mm
17mm (but a regular wrnch usually works too)

Park tool discusses overhauling hubs and included is bearing adjustment.

You have a new bike scottie so your cone and lock nut should take different size wrenches, probably a 15mm and a 17mm. Like SC said, you don't need a cone wrench for the lock nut which is usually 2mm larger than the cone.

I would happily look over your shoulder but your shoulder is in Calgary so the internet will have to do. This would be a good time to put new grease in your hub.
