Ok so forgive me if i'm being stupid:

Can the springs in a derailer wear out? I bought this bike that's kind of old (it was born the same year i was) and everything seems more ore less fine except the chain is super slack. It seems like the derailer just doesn't push very hard on it and that if it had a stronger spring in it the slackness would go away.

Am i crazy?

No you just can't push very hard.

Yeah, some old derailleurs springs get weak. New ones must be made of better steel because it is not really a problem anymore. Usually the old springs can be "bent" stronger.
