Jill updates on 7/1 below:
Hi everyone -
Lots of updates. ALL WITNESSES PLEASE READ!!!!
1) We have a very reputable criminal lawyer lined up to take Zack's case and he will start it tomorrow (Sunday). Thank you all who have been sending me your reports, however, David, the lawyer, says that he needs your statements SIGNED AND DATED with your FULL NAME and CONTACT PHONE NUMBER so he can begin interviewing witnesses Sunday evening.
I would like to collect all of these signed documents by Sunday at 4 p.m. I have arranged for Charles from Wright Bros Cycles in Fremont, to act as a depot station for witnesses to drop off their reports. If that does not work I will come to your house and pick them up personally. Please call me at eight-one-eight-eight-nine-seven-four if you would like me to pick it up.
2) 27 people showed up at Zack's bail hearing this afternoon. THANK YOU ALL!!! The Seattle bike community has been completely amazing in supporting this event. The judge was rather strict and thought he would be a threat given the charge, so she set his bail at $3000. We worked with a bondsman and posted the $300 to get him out. He will be released sometime this evening.
3) I still need any and all photos taken during this event. Please email them to me with your name and contact phone number. David will need to see all pieces of evidence. We found Sebastian and we're working on making copies of his video for David.
Also in regards to the photos, because this is a legal case now, please do not post the pictures on the Internet. They are evidence. The time will come for the rest of the public to see them.
If you are hesitant about getting involved, this event has taken on a critical mass of its own and it is looking very much in Zack's favor. Evidentally the cops seem to know that they were in the wrong and that many pictures were taken of them. Help us stand up for what is right. And we will have a damn fine party when this is all over.
Jill

Does anyone know how getting arrested works in Seattle?
I want to help our young friend J., but I'm not sure where to start. He's not currently listed as an inmate at the King Country Jail.

Jace and Zack were arrested by plain clothed cops during CM. Jace was blocking traffic and got tacked by them, then Zack jumped in to help Jace, then the cops showed their badges and threw them into a van and took them away. This is what I got from Josiah and Denny's phone calls. I don't know what the fuck to do. Wait? Grab some horses and bust them out????

That's crazy shit, especially since they are plain clothes. I don't think county would be using plain clothes officers. It sounds more likely that the cops were SPD.

Jace and Zack were corking traffic downtown for the rest of the CM riders when three beefy coked out dudes jumped out of a brown van and started yelling. I heard Jace was trying to calm them down and said he'd ride on, but the dudes tackled him. As far as I know and as far as I've heard, no one heard them announce that they were police officers before they exercised violence on our dear friend. Zack got into the mess trying to get them off of Jace, then one of them pulled his badge out of his shirt and everyone else backed off (about a dozen of us were ready to dog-pile on those fuckers). There were numerous people taking pictures of the van, the officers, and the abuse. There was even a young man in an orange shirt with dreads filming the event.
If anyone has any suggestions as to how we can show our support for our friends and our disgust with the behavior of those police officers, please let me know. I'm down for making phone calls to the sheriff's department, protesting at the courthouse, throwing molotov cocktails into crowded city streets, whatever.

I didn't think of this until I got home. The Sheriffs Dept. has been in the news in a big way in the past few monts. Major stories in the Times about violence and harasment. If someone who saw what happened could please call the Times or Stranger that would help our case.
Please keep us posted, and let us know if any cash is needed for legal stuff.
This sucks. When CM first started here the cops arested somebody and it made the news. All charges were dropped and there was a huge ride next Friday to protest the arest

Hello, I am not a .83 person but I lurk on the forum once in a while and figured there would be something about this incident here. I witnessed the assault on the two bicyclists - I was about ten feet away. The three men who later identified themselves as police initially appeared to be gangstas looking for a brawl. They had on the usual baggy clothing, flashy jewelry, and tattooos, no uniforms. One of them knocked down a bicyclist with no real warning, and further assaulted the fallen cyclist who was now lying on the street tangled up with his bicycle. Several people pulled the perpetrator off, at which time two more people who later identified themselves as police jumped in. But they in no way identified themselves until more people had almost pulled the three attackers off the person who was fallen and immobilized. At that point they then knocked down another bike rider. They then properly identified themselves as police.
Someone needs to get legal assistance for the arrested riders ASAP. Do they have any family that could be contacted ?

My wife and I witnessed this entire incident from about 5 feet, and we're both ready to help out however we can. Long story short... the officers were extremely aggressive from the outset. Jumped out of the van and instigated a confrontation, and did not identify themselves as law enforcement until well after the conflict rose to a boiling point. Let us know if we can do anything.

Hi everyone -
Joby, Neil, and I spent most of the evening downtown and at the King County Jail contacting people and instituting a plan. Neil has talked with Zack a few times and he is good, but knows he's got some roadblocks ahead. Jace was released tonight of his own recognizance and his bail was waived. He is ok, minus some serious scrapes.
Zack is being held in the King County jail without bail under some serious charges - assault of a law enforcement officer. His bail hearing is tomorrow (Saturday) at 12:30 p.m. at the King County Courthouse at James and 5th. The public is allowed to attend this hearing, but there is no contact allowed with Zack. If you are interested in showing up as a sign of support, please show up at the KCC plaza entrance at 11:30 a.m. in dignified attire (I emphasize this because of the seriousness of this matter. We're in the court's house, not ours). It will take time to get through the metal detectors and file up to his courtroom. I have to call tomorrow to find out what room it's in and will let everyone know.
Zack's mom and I are trying to get a lawyer to show up to this hearing. We have some leads, but hope it can happen in such short notice.
IF YOU WERE A WITNESS
Please email me at "jillita-at-gmail.com" with a description of what happened as soon as possible so that you remember everything vividly. Please include:
- Your name
- Your phone number
- Your street address (I'm just being thorough here)
- As detailed a description as possible including what time and where the events happened happened.
We need to collect as many accounts as possible. If it comes to a court hearing we will need as much evidence and witnesses as possible.
Thank you all so much for your show of support. I am so glad that Jace and Zack are ok and this wasn't worse. Joby and Neil were wonderful in their generosity tonight also. Now let's continue to stand up for what's right.
Peace,
Jill

Folks -- Jace is here at the Big Red House with Joby and Neil.. (this is Neil typing) ... Here is what we need:
* Statements: Write down anything and everything you can remember -- and do it as soon as possible --- then email is to Joby, Jill or myself. The more statements we can assemble, the better.
* Photos: If you took photos please upload them here, or email them to one of us.. anything is helpful... pics of the van, pics of the initial assault.. . our boys being dragged away.. all of it.
* Show up! Jace is out on P.R. (personal recognizance), but Zach is in the pokey over night... There is a bail hearing at 12:30pm Saturday, but we're not sure where just yet. If you are willing to dress all "business casual" and come down to the King County Court House (5th & James) ... let us know and we'll keep you in the loop. Once the bail hearing happens, we'll know a bit more and check back in here.
* Lawyers: We've got a couple of leads on lawyers.. but if you know someone who tinkers with the law (like we tinker with bikes..) we need to know.
You can PM joby or Jill (Harlott) to get email addresses
or drop Neil-mail at gmail.com (neilpcorcoran@...)
or call joby at 425 246 2516

These guys were king county cops. Jace saw their badges. While they do have legal juridiction, the Seattle streets are not their normal domain. I strongly suspect that this was a random encounter and not planned enforcement.
If you were a whitness, please stay involved with this. Things look somewhat grim for Zack, and the outcome will really be effected by how many people come forward to tell what really happened.

This bike lawyer, Bob Anderton, was referred to me tonight:
He has links to Critical Mass and Point 83!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He does more bicycle accident law, but he might be able to help us. To Bob's neighbor, the nice person who gave me Bob's name (I'm so sorry I don't remember your name....long long night) - I don't know if he'll be in his office tomorrow. Is there a chance you could knock on his door and see if he can help???
THANK YOU!!

I'm really impressed by the way you people are coming together here. I have been in situations where the cops and the system got stacked up against me, and the best way to fight it is to be polite, professional, and succinct. When you show up tomorrow in support of your friends, let them know how supportive you are by observing and taking absolutely everything in. I'm stoked to hear you guys had pictures and eyewitness accounts. Who was the guy with the video camera? Did he get a good shot?
it's only through keen observation and quick action that this is going to get settled in the way we'd like to see it. This sounds like something that would be perfect for the Stranger or the Weekly or whatever. They need to highlight the disconnection between the law enforcement and us, the people on the streets that ride bikes - powered by burritos, not gas.

Someone at Golden Gardens after the ride made an announcement and asked that anyone who has pictures or videos send them to SeattleBikeArrest@gmail.com. I sent an email to that address asking that they let us know here of any pictures or videos that have been collected.

Bob lives in my neighborhood, and I've met him at some of the community get togethers, but I don't actually know exactly where he lives. Also, I'm headed out of state in a couple hours to visit family for the 4th of July -- otherwise I would try to track him down for you today. Sorry I can't be of more help at the moment.

PLEASE NOTE:
Zack's bail hearing has been changed to 1:30 p.m. this afternoon at the King County jail, at the corner of 5th and James. Let's meet at 12:30 p.m. to organize. A bail bondman has been in touch and said that the more people who show up, the better it will look for the judge. But please remember, dress and act professional. Today's hearing will likely not be one involving witness testimony, just community support.
Thank you!
Jill

...Neil again..
The bail bondsman is ALLEN LYNN, and you can ask for him at the front desk of the Jail, they know him. He's wearing shorts, and a bronze shirt, (per his own description). I have Allen's number too.
He said that showing up in HUGE, as it shows community support for the individual, and goes a looong way to reducing his bail.. or perhaps just being released on recognizance... So if we show up, looking sharp, and acting real nice .. we can get him out today probably.
One person will be able to speak on his behalf today, probably a lawyer, but perhaps the 'rents.
BEST NOT TO TALK about any of the details of the ride while you are within the vicinity of the jail. We can all go hash out the details and strategize more at a restaurant.
Everyone who WAS there... write down everything you saw... as much detail as possible. Then it can be edited later into a statement for a lawyer. The more details you remember the better.
See you there..
.
Neil

I was there and saw the event. I sent my statement to Jill. I also have access to the seattlebikearrest@gmail.com account. There's only one photo and one video from that, both too late in the action. I forwarded those to Jill. I'll be at the hearing.
Someone needs to update the seattlecriticalmass.org webage with links to this forum and instructions to send videos/photos to the e-mail address! Few people from the ride know of this forum, but everyone knows the SeaCritMass webpage!

FWIW at this point, I just emailed Jill and seattlebikearressts with my account and a list of witnesses I spoke to last night (I was the guy at Golden Gardens collecting witness accounts last night and taking cell phone pics during the attack by the cops).
This incident is terrible. Generally, I respect cops because they have a really fucking hard job and are under intense stress... but assholes like these givem them all a terrible image. I'm still incenseced by the whole thing and am ready to whatever I can to help (unfortunately I found out about today's hearing too late)....
Anyway, my pictures and my account stand ready to work for justice... and please tell me if there is anything else I can do.
Jace and Zack, I am so sorry this happened. I hope you are both well and safe.

Hey folks,
I just sent my account to Last Days at The Stranger and to the news staff there. In the email, I pointed them to this board, hopefully so they can reach other witnesses and Jace and Zack. If anyone knows writers or anyone at the stranger, or othjer papers, get in otuch with them... It couldn't hurt if everyone who saw the even writes to last days too, jsut to make sure they realize how big and fucked up this was.
I'll contact Seattle Weekly nes staff shortly too.

There was a good turnout at the hearing. I didn't count but I'm guessing there were over 20 of us in the hearing room, and more were gathering outside. The room was small, we pretty much filled it. Bail was set at $3000 - Zack should be out this evening.

Hey Folks,
I just spoke with Jill who is at the jail waiting for Zack's release... She said that if anyone wants to come down and show a few happy faces welcoming him to freedom, which she thinks would be welcomed, he will be released around 6. Jill is waiting at 5th and Jefferson at at the King County Jail.

Hey folks,
I just got off the phone with Jill and she said that she needs any signed and dated witness statements that you have by 4 pm tomorrow (Sunday). that is ONE HOUR EARLIER THAN SHE SAID BEFORE.
Apparently the meeting with the lawyer is earlier than she thought.
Please be sure to get your witness statements in by 4 pm on Sunday. For info on dropping off at Wright Brothers in Fremont or having it picked up, please see above.
Also, the lawyer that is working on the case asked that you include your profession on the statement when you sign it. EG: student, writer, Office assistant or what have you. It adds to its signifgance if that is on it.
Looks like the stranger is running with a big story on this and I am contacting other outlets (at the permission of Jill and the lawyers). at this point Jace and zack can't talk to the press at their lawyer's request, but witnesses can. If you were a witness and are willing to talk to the press, please email me at cmonster at gmail dot com.
thanks!

Zack's out. We're at Myrtle Edwards so he can have a cleansing saltwater dip at his mom's request.
He seems to be in really good spirits.
Please do come forward if you were whiteness to this. It's going to come down to our word against theirs, and there were four cops. Numbers matter.

If this is any help at all, you may want to get in contact with Jennifer Granick, who helped defend Critical Mass participants involved in the police riot in San Francisco. She's at the Stanford Cyberlaw center now, but might be willing to refer to a good attorney in Seattle or help in some other way.
