Hey, I want to get a Chrome Metropolis shoulder bag, but I have gotten mixed reveiws. The alternative is the Ortlieb backpack, but let's face it, the Chrome is way cooler. Supporters say the Ortli falls apart, but negative people say the Chrome falls down your shoulder constantly. What is the general concensus? Price is the same and both are way waterproof.

i've had my chrome XL for about 3 years, tough a nails. i dont have any problems with it slipping, the strap that comes under your arm pit really keeps it stable. the only problem it that your will have one shouled much bigger than the other. if your going to carry heavy loads, a backpack might be the better option.

Have you looked into the Reload bags? They're made right in Seattle and can be custom tailored to your needs.

12th and Pike in Capitol Hill. They're super nice and the girls who make the bags are hot.

Shoulder bags hurt me. Quicker to get stuff in & out of if you're in a hurry though.
I have an Ortlieb backpack that is more or less new after years of use. It is actually REALLY waterproof.
The Chrome backpack is good as well.
RELOAD or PAC DESIGNS if you're rich...

I know it's totally uncool, bags that attach to your bike instead of your back make for a vastly more comfortable and efficient ride. Even just bungee-cording a backpack to a cheap rack works really well.

Of course, If you make lots of short trips, then the convenience of wearing a bag may outweigh the comfort and performance penalties.

greggs ortlieb is really nice, i'm amazed with how much stuff he always seems to be packin. if i were to get a new bag, 2 shoulder straps would be a must.

I'm a HUGE fan of backpacks over messenger bags, if for no other reason than to stay away from the whole scene thing Jake is so fond of.
I was bidding on a ortlieb, but it got a little out of hand (you know how ebay is).. but yeah. Spring for a Reload. :D!

Don't be a Messenger poser and get Chrome!
Don't be an REI employee wannabe and get Ortlieb!
(both are fine products btw)

Check these cats out. Made out of Recycled Seat Belts and inner tubes. Totally cool and made in Seattle!

http://www.alchemygoods.com

We stock them. And we give them our used inner tubes

The guy that picks up our tubes says that they wash the tubes and they do not smell. I just sniffed the one we have in stock and they do not smell at all!

Dean, When you gonna come visit me?

i was checking out those alchemy bags last time i was in your shop. they're totally kickass, but man, $150 is pretty steep for a bag.

MADE IN AMERICA!

North America!

Most other shit is made in Taiwan or people don't want to make money selling them. Remember, employees and rent cost money! I understand that you (we) need to save our precious dollars but, fuck, buy North American at least! Gas prices are rising and soon the cool Tawian/Chinesees stuff will start going up in price. You can meet and ride with the people that make your AG bag. Will Ortlieb repair your bag when it gets ripped/worn? AG is in Freemont! Ride over, wait and they repair your bag! Enough said, REPRESENT!

PS. Scotty is still the new Patrick Swayze (spelling?).

Are the straps on those bags adjustable? Or are they stuck being all long and on your hip? Bags on your hip aren't really all that hip. Word.
Also, if my bag were to wear out, I'd fix it myself. I'm sure most of you have seen my riding pants, yeah? haha.
I was just going to make my own bag, but I think there's a lot more to it than it seems.. not to mention my sewing machine is still back in Nevada.. patching pants by hand is one thing, building a bag is another!

Too bad they don't make a backpack like Reload does.. I think that's where my money is going once I finally spring for a bag. Plus the'll do a custom flap for me! I'm thinking a penguin. With a crown. w00t!

Awesome, thanks man! Thing is, when I have mine, I use it A LOT. Like at least an hour a day.. just making shit and altering clothes and whatnot. I kinda need one of my own.. either have mine sent up to me or just buy another.
When I was doing Fashion Design at the Art Institute, I had free reign over the industrial machines at the school, but I kinda stopped going.. :\

I gotta say that I toally love my ReLoad bag. If i hadn't wanted to be all scene and have a custom bag done up like Dean does, then I was definately going to get a Chrome. I've just never really been to keen on the Ortlieb's, however Gregg's bag is pretty fucking sweet.

The backpacks that ReLoad makes are hot. Really comfy and well put together. I have a shoulder bag from them and like it a lot because it so convinient to get stuff out of it on rides. So I reccomend ReLoad over any of those, but I think that if you're set on either a chrome or an ortlieb that I'd go for a chrome.
